I found the car I really liked from Gatorland online yesterday. I’m not particularly fond of the pressure put on you when you go into a dealership, so I started messaging their online rep to get the process started. Heather (the online rep) checked to make sure the car I was looking at was still available. After confirming, I started emailing her information about my current trade in as well as what I was looking to pay out the door for the vehicle. I was very clear that I didn’t want to come into the dealership until we had a deal in place. The sales manager (David Mountain) emailed me to have me come in as he had agreed to the pricing and trade in on my current vehicle. I agreed to come in this morning so that we could get the deal done. This dealership is not super close to me as I was coming from Middleburg, so I definitely didn’t want to go to the dealer unless all that was needed to finalize the deal was an inspection and my signature. I arrived at Gatorland this morning at 9:30am where I was supposed to meet with David’s top salesman Wayne Johnson. I met with Wayne who overall seemed like a nice guy. He asked a few questions about my trade in and then had me wait a bit while he attended to other matters. Anytime a dealer makes me wait I typically grow more skeptical by the minute. After waiting for about 20-25 minutes, Wayne was ready to start finalizing our deal. It was at that time that Wayne informed me the vehicle I had looked at online just yesterday was no longer available. I immediately stood up to leave recognizing how the dealership was trying to play me. Wayne insisted that the car had been sold just last night at which I questioned why I wasn’t contacted then or even told that initially as soon as I had arrived. Additionally, I had plans of driving out after work last night but was informed that they closed at 7. I had last spoken with them at 5:45pm just an hour and 15 minutes before closing. The car I was looking at was a used 2012 Optima EX with only 18k miles on it. It seems extremely unlikely that the one car I wanted was all of a sudden sold between 5:45pm and 7:00pm last night. Anyways, before leaving, Wayne assured me that he had another car ready that he could pull the trigger on at the same agreed deal. Unfortunately, this car was only an LX model and also had over 50k miles on it. Not quite the same! At that point, I decided to get back in my car and leave as quick as I could. I understand that dealers have to make their money, but I at the very least expect for a place of business to conduct themselves with a certain level of integrity. I wouldn’t recommend this dealer to anyone.
Thanks,
Aaron
