This was about two years back how Thomas Toyota Sales Person Jason and Sales Manager Pat Sullivan screwed me on the New Years day.
I own a 1999 Lexus ES300 and wanted to trade it to a low maintainance car and Thomas Toyota of Joliet were successful in trapping me. They sent me a coupon which states they’ll pay me $1000 more on my Lexus trade in value. I went alone to their showroom on 12/31, the biggest cheater I have ever met Jason greeted me and I told him that I am in market for a low cost car and want to see their inventory. He showed me a couple and I liked Ford Focus Hatchback model. I told him I’ll stop by the next day together with my wife and finalize the deal. He assured me that I can take the Ford Focus with me by signing a contract and if my wife or I doesn’t like it, we can come back cancel the contract and have my Lexus back. For sure my wife doesn’t like the hatchback model and she insisted to get my Lexus back.
on 01/01/2009, we went to Joliet all the way from Naperville to get my Lexus back. Cheater Jason never show his face and the Sales Manager Patrick Sullivan was a big jerk. He said I never mentioned that I need my wife’s consent to trade my car and the deal was over and I should go home with Ford Focus. I insisted on calling Jason into his office which didn’t instead he spoke to him over the intercom and said Jason never mentioned about the contract-only sale to him and the sale is final. Hello, if your employ doesn’t pass the info, is that the customer’s problem?
After 45 minutes fo arguments, I had to choose another car from him inventory and my wife and I were made to like the Kia Rio Sedan from the available limited small car inventory. They knew that this Kia Rio has a lot of mechanical problems and deliberately they kept a very low amount of gas in it so that I can’t even take it on main road. Not to mention, the car has a lot of scratches on front bumper which they promised to fix on a work day. I drove it on the side streets and thought everything is OK. When we go to Pat for finalizing the deal, he didn’t give me the $1000 additional cash on my Lexus and I end up paying $7000 PLUS my Lexus ES300 for a junk Kia Rio.
Soon after the deal, we hit road after filling a tank full of gas and I realized that the car has a problem as the car was litterally swinging like a swing while driving at 50 MPH on highway. After a month, I took the car to Thomas Toyota to get it fixed and color scratches repainted. My Salesperson Jason was fired and Pat Sullivan never interested to meet me. He was walking along the aisle that I am sitting and he acted like he never knew me. The service person told me that the front driver side wheel and tire are broken, some lug nuts are missing/broken, and few other mechanical problems. I told him about the promise the Sales person did when I bought the car. He asked me if I have a written promise. I said NO then he said he can’t do anything for me. I was so burned up and have nothing to do. I returned to home and took it to a Meineke and they gave me the problem in written and also told me that my car is still under warranty. I took it to a Kia Dealer and he fixed it and 100, yes I mean 100 other problems for free of cost. Imagine if my car was not under warranty, how much I would have spent to get my car in a safe driving conditiosn.
After this incident, I have learned a lesson not to believe any Sales person and get everything written down.
I highly recommend people to think twice before you go to Thomas Toyota of Joliet, or be preapred to get screwed. That’s all they do, they screw their customers.
The reason I am writing this after two years is Thomas Toyota started trapping me again with phishy deals and I am sure 100s not 1000’s of others in Chicagoland must be getting the same deal coupons. So I wanted to make people aware who are about to fall in their trap.
You do not greet me when I bring my car into the service garage, leave me standing there, then the oil change takes over 2 hours, you did not call me as promised so I had to seek the car out myself. When driving home a large part from my undercarriage starts dragging. I had to lay on the ground as to see the problem. I could not fix it (I am a woman by the way), so I had to drive all the way back to the dealership. Once again, they did not greet me, when I finally did get help, they did not apologize or act like anything was wrong an even act like there was urgency in this. After at least another hour I could not take it any longer and told them I wanted my oil maintenance package refunded because they wanted me to keep driving my new car without the protection of the plastic undercarriage. Rain was scheduled the next day, and we had to drive into the city etc. so I said that this was not going to happen. They did not offer a loaner but after a lot of upsetting “conversation” they finally relented to take the piece off one of their other cars so I would not have to wait for the replacement. That was the start of hours of fighting with them. I told them up from the start that I was recently diagnosed with cancer and that I was going through chemotherapy. I told them that I could not be stressed like this. They sat there with a deer in the head light look to them and it made no difference to them. Some big boss from the dealership got me and sat me in the middle of the showroom in front of all these customers for at least another hour. I was shocked. I had to start all over again explaining what was going on. I was so very upset and crying. I said that I do not trust them and that I want my money back so I could take my business elsewhere. After hours of this, he angrily went to get the paperwork and said that he would give me 3 free oil changes so we would try them again. Well, that was on June 7, 2010. It is now November 27, 2010. I finally got a check after calling the customer service department and going through it all over again. He said that it “fell through the cracks” I bet that it would not “fall through the cracks” if I owed him $344.00! The agreed upon amount was $344.00 and was stated on my on my paperwork. They sent me a check for $224.00 and some change. So, they charged me about $120.00 for 2 oil changes.
I am absolutely mortified at the treatment I have received. At the very least they should not have charged me for the oil change that they so royally screwed up on!!
THOMAS TOYOTA SUCKS!!! I have bought a new car there and I sent my neighbor to buy a new car there. NEVER AGAIN!!! SHAME ON THEM!!! SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! I hope that it was worth it to them because my story will be sung from the highest mountain for a long time!
Sales rep claimed front end alignment off an $80 dollar repair when in actuality it was the rack in the rack and pinion steering and the coil springs and front struts that cost over $1500.00 to repair. Joe Rizdy the GM. decided that he would not aid financially in the matter. This is after being lied to about the condition of the vehicles condition and told by the floor manager Danen and my rep Chris Auld that they assured me that they were sure I would get help or some financial assistance to leave me a satisfied consumer.Beware of this dealership, since my purchase on sept.the 5th 09 I have met several couples ripped off like this by these folks.
BEST GUYS AROUND I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THEM FOR A NEW OR USED CAR PURCHASE
Thomas Toyota Joliet can be easily proclaimed the worst dealer of USA. They have some real crook salesmen and managers, who are nothing else than a bunch of gangsters and thugs.
Before buying this Honda CRV from them, which I saw in “cars.com”, I first checked with BBB, if Thomas Toyota is an accredited dealer or not, and found them there. I also thought that since this is a big group, which deals with new Toyota, Nissan and Scion cars, they will be a reliable dealer to buy a car. I wont need a mechanic to get the car verified. THAT was my BIGGEST mistake. I am a total amateur with cars, so I always had it in my mind that I will buy a used car from a big dealer, not from a private party or from small road side car dealers.
When I found this Honda CRV wth 130,000 miles, I first called them, and booked it for $500 dollars deposit using my credit card, so that they do not sell it to others. It seemed perfect to me, as it was from a big dealer, and second, the price was good. When I met the salesman (Mr. Mike Resnick), the next day, He said the car is in a superb condition and will easily go for next 100,000 miles without any problem. Infact, the “Check Engine Light” was on, while I was buying the CRV, but, he said, it was due to faulty fuel cap and it can be changed for less than 50 bucks. The car had a kicking feeling, for which he told that it was due to the muffler, which can again be changed for a meager amount. I totally beleived him and that was my biggest mistake. Actually I never suspected any foul play with them, since they are big dealers. I bought the car for 4500 dollars.
Within a week, I bought this car, the whole picture changed. I just went to a reputed workshop in Chicago, to fix this kicking feeling out of the car, by changing the muffler, and they said the car is in real bad condition. They added that If I dont get rid of it, nobody will pay me a dime for this car, in a month, as the motor will die very soon. I was in a total shock, and I returned back to them in exact 7 days. It needed a repair for more than $4000 to change valves and major engine parts.
In exact 7 days, I returned to the dealer, and told them I cannot take this car back as it is a total Rip-off. But, they argued that its a “As-Is” and will give less value to the car, if I do a trade-in. I retaliated and said it is just 7 days, I bought the car. After much arguing, they finally agreed to give only $2500 dollars. RIDICULOUS !!! as a Trade-In !!! Thats straight 2000 dollars loss in 7 days.
Moreover, in the bill, they mentioned that they added only the esential taxes and charges. But what I later observed, is they added a Keypod of 400 dollars, which I never asked for. I never received that and still calling them regarding this. So I am stuck right now with this huge 2000 dollars loss, with nothing much to help myself.
I am just a Grad student and always wanted to buy a cheap old car so as to meet my basic convience needs. But this whole incident that I came across while buying my first car from Thomas Toyota can be easily termed as one of my worst experiences in my life. I sincerely pray Thomas Toyota to be doomed and bankrupt as soon as it can be.
