My advice to you: DO NOT BUY A SUBARU OUTBACK! Before you buy, Google this phrase: “Subaru Outback Head Gasket Problems.” It will tell you all you need to know.
And if, after reading up on it, you STILL buy an Outback, DO NOT TAKE IT TO GRAYSON FOR SERVICE.
Three times in a row I was there. Each time they told me that I needed over a thousand dollars work done on a car that had been routinely maintained per the owner’s manual at Grayson Automotive.
They constantly push for the “up-sell.” The profits in selling cars have dropped in recent years. Dealerships make little profit on selling cars. They are now making it up in the service departments. This place is the worst. I would not trust them.
I would be glad to go into greater detail with anyone who replies. Just let me know.
I have a 2009 Subaru Outback for which this dealership did 80% of the maintenance since it was new.
At the 70K mile mark, I put $1,700 into the car in routine maintenance at the direction of the Grayson Subaru Service department. At that time, the employee told me that THAT work should cover all maintenance for years other than oil changes.
Exactly three months later, the “Check Engine” light comes on. I take it to the dealer. I tell the service rep the engine light is on and he immediately begins to tell me that he recommends a new Timing belt. He hasn’t even seen the car yet.
I tell him that three months ago, a lady named Debbie at this dealership recommended $1,700 worth of work, which I allowed them to do. He says Debbie is a former employee who made a mistake and I need to put another $1000 into the car for a timing belt (which I remind you, he hasn’t even looked at the car.)
I decided to let them check it out and he calls me that night to tell me that a common problem with the Outback is that the Head Gasket forms a leak in most Subaru Outbacks and they must all be fixed eventually. COST: $3,400!!
That’s a grand total of $4,400 in repairs on a car that has a blue book value of around $14,000.
I checked around with several other auto service centers and found that several that will do the same work for $1,800.
I went to pick up the car and voiced my concerns about their business. Apparently they didn’t like my tone, and some big guy from the service walked up, crossed his arms and stared at me like a bouncer.

I moved to Knoxville TN in 2007 after purchasing my Forester in Pennsylvania. I have taken to Grasyon Subaru twice since living here and have been dissatisfied both times. I have been taking my car to Pep Boys and really like their services, not to mention prices, rebates and rewards.
The first time that I took the car to Grayson was right before the car was going out of warranty. I got the oil changed and asked them to go over the car and make sure nothing was wrong before it went out of warranty. I mentioned a few things for them to check, but they never looked at it and the service rep just blew off my questions.
This month I went back the second time. I had an exhaust leak, which I feared might have been a drivetrain issue, so I took it to the dealer. They had me prepay for the part I needed and told me that I would owe for the labor (either 1/2 an hour or an hour) when the part came in and the work was done. I took the car in and the job was done in less than an hour, but they tried to bill me for 1.5 hours. Only after I showed the guy my watch and told him that I had only been at the dealership for an hour did he capitulate and lower the price. In the end, I’m happy with the work, but they are definitely shady when it comes to pricing and don’t seem to care about the customers that much. If I need to go to the dealership again, I’ll go to the one in Maryville.
