I bought a 2013 Kia Sorento from another dealership but because Charlie’s is closer to my home I have been using them for servicing my vehicle. I have been getting oil changes every 4,000 due to how much I drive. The dealerships are supposed to do a multicheck point inspection every time you bring your car in. When I went to get my 2013 car inspection, they failed me. My car was a year old w/ 25,000 on it. They never told me my alignment needed to be done and because of this my tires wore on the inside, forcing me to buy 4 new tires at 25,000 miles on tires rated for 70,000. When I contacted them they took no responsibility about the multipoint check and after a while they finally offered me half off the alignment cost, charging me $45.00 instead of $90.00. The kicker is the auto service shop I found by recommendation of a friend, Jax Auto Service, was charging me $45.00. Charlie’s didn’t care about loosing my business, which I have been giving them for 5 years. I am disappointed that they didn’t step up to the plate and I will no longer use or reccommend Charlie’s in Augusta to anyone due to this experience.
Very rude and pushy sales staff. I’ve shopped that dealership when looking to buy my last two vehicles – both experiences were nearly identical, with different staff involved. The first salesperson you meet is very friendly and laid back – you go out for a test drive, they answer your questions, appear very attentive to your needs. When you start talking price, they turn you over to a sales manager whose role is to play the “bad cop” in the transaction. The first time I visited the dealership, I dealt with Thomas Laverdiere and this most recent visit I met with Mark Coulombe – both are sales managers there. They put the hard sell on you “don’t you know what you want?” “you don’t trust me that this is a good deal” “why would you want to check with your spouse – can’t you make decisions.” The sales manager becomes very unpleasant the minute you show any hesitation in the deal – even when you are very clear from the start that you aren’t there to buy that day. They will also look for any opportunity to make you wait in your chair for them. I met with the sales manager for 10 minutes and he indicated he was going to run numbers for me and didn’t come back for 20 minutes. When I got up to look around he was just shooting the bull with another salesperson out back. He literally chased me down in the parking lot when I walked out after that wait. These guys are dinosaurs – old school car dealers with old school tactics. Be prepared if you have any thought of doing business with them…
I have never beeen treated so poorly as a customer in my life. We purchased a car that I thought was a good deal and before I had even made the first payment the engine went. I had called and tried to have it taken in for noises but was told their mechanic was on vacation so could not take it in. Even though the car had a preexisting condition and their mechanic was out I am now paying for a new engine because I barely went over the 1,000 mile warranty. I finally agreed to pay for an engine and have them install it. The engine was supposed to arrive a week ago. Its been almost 2 months I’ve had no car. I will NEVER deal with them again, especially Rick. His knowledge of cars is 0 and he does not call back when he promises and is rude and condescending. I will tell everyone I know to avoid them like the plague.
OMG!! I’m dealing with the same thing! We bought and 2006 Silverado and it went to the shop within 2 days for a bad engine. They supposedly put another engine in it but it came back worst than the first a week later! It was losing oil pressure and had a loud cam bearin noise. It went back to the shop for almost two weeks and when we got it back it still has a noise and losing oil pressure. It is now Jan 28, 2014 not even 90 days later and it has the 90 day warranty and they are telling us it is supposed to sound that way and that the oil meter is lying it is not losing oil pressure. They painted the bumper and rust is now coming through the whole bumper. We did not buy this at the wholesale place. They said they would trade with us for a different truck but won’t find us a different truck and everytime we find something they say not that is not for sale to you! They salesmen got in my sons face this last weekend telling him that he bought the truck and its problems with it. Again this is less than the 90 days warranty they supposedly gave us. They told me they have been very good to me and that their isn’t anything wrong with engine. I also have a 2004 Avalanche with a 5.3 and I told them we needed to put them side by side because mine doesn’t have a cam bearin noise and isn’t losing oil pressure. Very dissatisfied and am looking to go to consumer protection and or hire a lawyer. We have made two payments on this truck and Charlies had it at least three weeks of the little more than two months since we signed the papers.
I came to Charlies at the recommendation of a close friend who has purchased several vehicles from their family of dealerships. I was greeted immediately upon arrival by one of the salepeople (Russ). His greeting was warm and friendly. I explained to him what I was looking for and after his asking a few questions, he recommended the Nissan Rogue. It being very cold outside, Russ had me wait inside while he went and brought the vehicle up to the door for me. He was very knowledgable about the vehicle and its features. After a test drive I was certain that this was the vehicle for me. Russ gathered the necessary information from me and within just 5 minutes was back and introduced me to his Manager Sean. Sean went over the figures with me and was also very polite and professional. After a bit of negotiating, we came to an agreement on the price and Sean prepared all of the necessary paperwork for the sale. From the time I arrived at the dealership until I drove off in my new Rogue, only 1 hour & 20 minutes had passed. While I was waiting for the paperwork to be processed Russ took the time to show me the Service Department and the Car Wash which I was pleased to learn was free for my use at anytime as a Charlies customer. Upon completion of the paperwork, Russ sat with me and went over all of the features of my new car prior to me leaving. Buying a new car is not something anyone looks forward to doing. Russ & Sean made my first experience at Charlies a memorable one. I look forward to telling others about their great attitude towards their customers and their professional manner of dealing with me. I would recommend the Charlies Family of Dealerships completely!
I went in looking to trade in a 1999 vehicle for a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. As soon as I walked in I was introduced to James Mayo. He was very helpful and knowledgeable in every aspects of the vehicle and made me feel very comfortable dealing with him. All through the process of purchasing the vehicle He was right there for me. He even went above and beyond by going to to pick the vehicle of my choice at another dealer on his day off. Very good service. Great bunch of people highly recommeneded.
Great Store. Bought my Wrangler there. They had 42 Wranglers and a ton of other new products. A huge used car lot too. Contacted many other dealers that had only a few. Great selection. Sales Person Andy and his Manager Marc knew everything I had questions to. Finance Manager and the owner worked out a great deal. Thats right, the owner Steve Shuman worked with me. Family owned with family atmosphere. Great people. Will go back next time.
You should visit this complex, largest facility north of Providence Rhode Island!
Very friendly and knowledgeable team at Charlie’s Service Department. I had a small problem with noise coming from the front suspension. Darrell and his team were able to test drive and put my Altima on the lift within 5-10 minutes of being there. They diagnosed it within 15-20 of looking at the components of my front suspension. Turned out to be worn bearings on my control arms… They ordered the part the same day and parts arrived the next morning. Finished the install the same day the parts arrived. Great price for the service and saved a lot of time working with Charlie’s Would have spent a lot more at other dealerships and would have waited 2 or 3 days for the install.
They also have a great drive through service area with free coffee, wifi, a BIG tv and friendly people.
Great group of guys at Charlie’s……THANKS GUYS!!!
The team at Charlie’s is great. I just bought my new 2011 Jeep Cherokee and they were awesome. Andy Dupont got me the Jeep I wanted, and the service and parts department were excellent, they ordereda and installed some sweet looking accessories!
I could not be happier that I bought from Charlies.
From the moment I walked in through the doors, the customer service was friendly and was not pushy for one minute. As I waited to be assisted I felt comfortable and enjoyed the fact that there was a well organized sitting area. I have been to other car dealer places and I felt pressured to purchase a vehicle and not for one minute did I feel that way when I went to Charlie’s Nissan. I explained what I needed in a vehicle and the budget I’m on. I was not sure in the vehicle I wanted to purchase but Russ Taled to us for 25 minutes set me up with the perfect vehicle for me and my family and he made sure I did not go over budget and it was something I can afford on a monthly basis.
The experience was great and I was satisfied with the purchase and service I received. Russ and Tom went the extra mile and transferred my items from my trade in vehicle to my new purchase since she knew it was going to be hard for me to let go and knew I would get emotional.
Thank you Charlie’s for all you have done to make sure this all went smooth for me. I’m happy that I “Joined the Family!”
Hello I got the BEST Salesman in car buying and salesmanship in Maine. James Mayo provided the most gentle and courteous salesmanship a dealer could ask for. Mayo displayed superb salesmanship and professionalism that is a rarity these days. Charlie’s Motor Mall has one of the best “Special deal handler in it’s buisness. Thank You James, and Charlie’s Motor Mall, Augusta, Maine, for employing well customer caring employees. May God bless all of the Charlie’s family and team members, thank you in making me feel very “special” like family.
A very Happy and satisfied customer
My wife and I recently purchased a new Venza and Tundra from Charlie’s Toyota. Since we were in the market for 2 new cars and only had ideas about what we wanted/were looking for, the process of finding a good match was stressful. Until we checked out Charlie’s Toyota! The whole staff was patient, knowledgeable and eager to help. I didn’t feel pressured or like I was being “sold”. Being newly married, the financial part of the new cars is what I was worried about. The finance department was so helpful. They understood our situation and set me up with a great deal and low monthly payments. If you are looking for a new vehicle, I recommend you check them out. I am proud to say I am a loyal Charlie’s Toyota customer!
When I called George he explained that the dealers down south advertised prices to get you in the door. Well, that is exactly what happened. We shopped local in the Portland area and were treated like a number! All they cared about was how much we wanted for our trade in. Then they offered us thousands less for our vehicles saying that is what they are worth.
George was right, the bottom line is what counts, we did both deals on black Friday and driving north from Portland was absolutely worth it!!! Charlie’s is the BEST!!!!!!!!
Jeff Hanson the General Sales Manager was so kind, he helped my wife decide the color by taking her outside and inside the showroom to see different lighting conditions.
So head north!! That is where you are treated like a “Part of the Family!”
Thank you George and Jeff
I drove over an hour to get to Charlie’s after emailing them exactly what I wanted. Well I showed up and the salesperson had 3 vehicles selected and warmed up for me to look at. It was raining when I got there and the salesman brought the vehicle I liked the best inside to show it to me.
I really liked the vehicle and we negotiated with his boss who was also very friendly and helpful. I ended up getting a great deal and financed it with them as well. They said the used 11 banks and I got a rate lower than my wife’s credit union. It was a fabulous experience and I will send my friends in to them as well.
They also provide a free carwash everytime I go to Augusta.;)

where do I start,…”quoted” a price over the phone, drove 20 miles to get a better idea and review my trade in. first off,..Im an asshole who speaks his mind and hates dealing with dishonesty…I fit right in at Charlies. Before any amount was discussed,…I made very it “clear”…and I quote…”Im not fucking around with high prices then low prices…and the infamous good salesman / bad salesman game between him and his manager. Give me your lowest price that I asked for,..or I leave…simple right? Nope. Not only did they switch salesman on me several times,…but he offered me two prices on a sheet of paper that were not even close to what I researched,..asked for,..was told over the phone….or what I knew what they could sell me this vehicle for …(used car lot). Not only did I begin to lay into him and literly laugh in his face about,…he then proceeded to turn the paper over and offer a payment that was $50 a month less than the first side. I grew needless to say,…frigin PEEVED!!! I asked him why he couldnt do that to begin with like I asked in the begining of our introduction. He said nothing with his poker, salesman face. I left.. The next day, i received a call from the salesman,..asking me of course if there was anything he could do to help me of get me in this vehicle. I told him, nothing…u had ur chance last night and pissed me off in the process. The poker face manager then called me back offering a payment $22 a month lower. I then recieved call from the salesman asking me what I thought….I dont recall what I told him….and I say this cause they called me every day , twice a day, for the next 4 days. One call, the manager asked me if my trade in vehicle had reached a certain “mileage”,..as if to scare me to think it would be worth less if it crossed a certain mileage thresehold. “see uu first,…see us last,..but see us and save”…
How bout you just save yourself the aggrevation and anguish and go somewhere else….
It is quite obvious from your writing that you are an uneducated individual who didn’t seem to get things your way! If you are going to write a review on a business do yourself a favor and at the very least, use appropriate grammar and at least attempt to utilize the English language.
Our first car was purchased from the Kia portion of this dealership near the first of July. Both of the Kia salesmen were wonderful and we had no issues with them.
We did NOT end up purchasing the 2nd Kia Soul due to the issues that arose when we went to drop off the loaner, and give the dealership a check for the vehicle.
I was berated, humiliated and my character was called into question in front of sales staff and customers.
The General manager Alan boomed acrossed the room that I was “nothing but rude” and that “you disliked Rick the salesman” but could offer not back up to his claims.
In reality we gave Rick a very high rating on the customer survey regarding our first purchase. My husband was not happy with a phone call he got – but he never was angry with Rick the caller. It was the premise of the call that upset him and he said that repeatedly.
I tried for over 10 minutes to calm the situation down as I stood below the General Sales Manager’s high desk crying in front of everyone.
Trying to explain to him that this is important to me because I am not a hypocryte – I started the Kindness Revolution to honor my daughter who was killed in a car accident in November and for anyone to question my character or my commitment to that cause is highly upsetting.
This is what I sent to the dealership – I got a canned – “it should not have happened” response – no apology was offered.
Please accept my apology for taking our business elsewhere on the 2010 Kia Soul that I had planned to purchase for my daughter Amber. We are purchasing elsewhere due to the incident that happened in your offices this morning. I feel that the way the situation was handled this morning was highly inappropriate and very unprofessional. I had no problem with my husband being spoken to if there was a preceived attitude problem but that should never have happened in front of other customers and staff. My character was called into direct question – I was told I was rude yet no one could state any situation where I was rude or inappropriate at any point in time. I left your store in tears. I was told that I disliked Rick – that is not the case at all and as a matter of fact both my husband and I gave Rick a very high rating on the customer survey. My husband did take issue with and called Allan on the phone call that we received about what he had originally understood to be a “buy inn” to hold our spot in the cash for clunkders program. It was not explained the 1,000 was to hold a particular vehicle for Amber as we had not picked the exact model yet. However I also heard him say that he liked Alan and that he wanted to make sure he didn’t get him in trouble – he did not want to “shoot the messenger”… I did also get a call on my work phone apparently after 5:00 last night from Brian Condon letting me know of the delay – unfortunately I did not get that message prior to arriving at your location this morning. Not once during the last month had anyone indicated to us that Charlie’s was not yet signed up as an approved/participating dealer in the cash for clunker’s program – today was the first time we heard that. I hope you can see where the changes and the delays were frustrating to us as we tried to purchase our second car from you for our daughter. I pride myself on my kindness, my professionalism and my tact. I was highly upset when leaving your office to have been berated by staff in front of at least 10 people both customers and staff where I was told that I was rude and that it was my fault because my husband is an “ass”. My husband is not an ass, he may have been a bit upset over things that happened and he may have spoken louder than necessary at times but he is a professional man in the customer service industry and he is most definitely not an “Ass”. It was hurtful and very inappropriate in my opinion for this to be said, especially infront of others. I feel that both my husband and my character were defamed today and that the words spoken were sladerous. I am sorry once again for backing out of the purchase, but I just could not bring myself to return to the place where I had had such a horrifying experience.
I sent this fax to the owner of Charlie’s his son had originally left a voice mail telling me that it appears that an apology was in order and asking to sit down and speak with me. I sent him a detailed fax with all the blow by blow and when I called to follow up and set up a time to meet he said “I have spoken to everyone involved and it should not have happened that way” but he didn’t elaborate – for all I know he was talking about the way we reacted not the behavior of his staff. No apology was given.
I contacted the Better Business Bureau and filed a compliant and asked that I get a confirmation in writing that I was never rude and that at no time did I or my husband ever indicate that we disliked Rick the Kia salesman. I also requested that Charlie’s and/or the General Sales Manager make a donation to The Kindness Revolution.
Charlies sent back a response to the BBB that was full of excuses about how the cash for clunkers program is difficult, has been a problem etc… he did apologize for our treatment but he did not address either of my two requests.
Two months ago I purchased a vehicle from this dealership and within 2hrs it broke down. Two days later it was towed back due to another issues. It took 5days for them to fix it and before I even left the parking lot it was diagnosed with a $5000 transmission problem and it is still sitting there while I am begging rides off people because they refuse to give me a loaner and keep blowing smoke about what is to be done. Don’t purchase from this dealership unless you want nothing but problems and the typical “sleazy car dealer” feeling asc. with them.
Dealership pulled typical bait and switch on very informed consumer!
I researched an outback sport, accessories, sticker, dealer holdbacks, etc. Drove every subaru model twice before presenting an exact specification from the Subaru web site to nine Maine dealers.
Charlies was aggressive, instantly matching the best deal I had and quoting well on accessories. Other dealers questioned just how good the deal is. So I questioned the deal twice and asked for the deal to have all paperwork drafted to “force the issue”. Twice my sales person said that all numbers, features, etc were correct and final.
When I called to finalized deal, only the “manager was available”. But he assured me that he “was involved in all pricing aspects of this vehicle pricing with my sales person”. So I proceeded to try to get the paper work done and the car delivered to me….
Suddenly he needed to make sure everything was there “for my best interest” and to “make sure that “all the T’s are crossed”, etc. Well, guess what….1500 dollars more later, he found a few “mistakes”.
Would you do business with a dealer that bait and switched after I already tried to question the deal several times?
Charlies was too aggressive to be true and confirmed it in emails twice…that amounts to misrepresentation to the consumer, outright bait and switching the deal or just having a lousy business model that can quote vehicles.
Admittedly I was streamed because I had shut down my other deals that were close. The manager Brad, called me a “telephone tough guy” and that “Charlies had laywers for this kind of thing.”
I guess Charlies needs those lawyers a lot, considering my experience.
