The problem I had with them was that they made me way upside down on my vehicle was hard to decipher until the deal was done and I got my paperwork and was able to look it over. I do not like the sportage I have now is noisy on the road and the mileage meter is inacurate other than that the vehicle is good. just saying buyer beware as they as not exactly honest as I have found with most auto dealerships.
When I was beggining my search for a honda element, I was looking anywhere for the model I wanted, they had one with the options, I felt the advertised price was fair, and they had written vehicle had never been smoked in, that was so important to me, after letting them know via internet I was coming out, I got out on 122nd and wasn’t sure exactly where the vehicle was, so I called and told the operator where I was sitting in my car, and which dealership was it? still got wrong directions, no problem, got inside and I was told they didn’t have the vehicle on the lot, the salesperson went to another lot to get it, I might of waited 10 minutes, not an issue, the salesperson arrived with the element, and when he opened the door, the smell of cigarette smoke came out , hard to mask, he confirmed it was indeed a smokers vehicle, and I told him it was stated in the ad, that it wasn’t, he said no, upon going to his office, he looked at the ad, and it was, he could see a burn mark on the seat, and it appeared this element had seen kinder owners, scratches, and the car fax showed it originated in another state of arizona, had three owners before tonkin, and had been on there lot for several months, tonkin bought it at an auction. I shared with the salesperson my apprehention of even coming into the dealership because of thier reputation, and he stated it was a good place to work and he felt they did indeed have a good reputation. He was polite, but I definitely felt like I wanted to leave, so glad I did, went down the road, and had seen another one advertized at auto solutions, It had exactly what I wanted, $1500, worth of snazzy rims and tires, less mileage, and non smoked in, the place didn’t haggle on price, the marked price is what they sold for, they showed me the car before they detailed it, so I knew they weren’t covering anything up, There was no pressure what so ever, I asked exactly how much I would need to close the deal and went down and got a cashiers check, they had the car detailed and ready for me to pick up the next day. Have had the vehicle for over 30 days so far and no issues, I highly reccomend the company named auto solutions, they offer to purchase a new vehicle for you of your choice, kind of like a broker, or you can purchase from there used lot, either way I felt the honesty and integrity from this business. footnote* the carfax deal that Ron tonkin offered for any vehicle you looked at is a good service. Also liked the quick response time on getting back to me via the intenet. So , Ron tonkin has some nice attributes. I must add also, I am not a person that likes to buy cars at dealerships, too many bad experiences at new car dealerships.
I was ready to buy a CRV that day, cash in hand, but the “closer” would not give me a drive off price, instead he kept circling all these numbers. I flipped his paper over and asked for a total dollar figure repeatedly, but he would not. Then he asked for my full address and i gave him my county, city and zip, and this wouldn’t work for him. I told him i am done and was on my way out where he told me “Don’t let the door hit you in the ass” He is very lucky I didn’t hear that, my friend told me after we left he said that. I then left there and bought a CRV at Gladstone Honda that very same day!
🙂 My experience at Ron Tonkin was very pleasent. Samy was well versed in his knowledge of Hondas and answered all my questions well. With the exception of some pressure by the finance person, my dealing with Samy an others at Ron Tonkin Honda was a very pleasent experience.
I had a poor experience at the Ron Tonkin on Canyon Rd. (Being talked down to, told I couldnt find better pricing, showed a KBB print out of my trade that was $1500 below what I checked it that A.M.–ETC.) I found a car I liked at that location but was annoyed… If you check pricing and look at KBB and a more accurate NADAguides before you go in you can be informed-Anyway;)
I found another car I wanted to see at a different Ron Tonkin 122nd, and thru internet was contacted by Stephan. I told him I had a poor experience and he was more than willing to work hard to erase my annoyance with the other dealership. He was never pushy, negotiated a great price on a very nice car for us and I would recommend him if you are looking to buy a car from a dealership. Also compared to other dealerships in OR./WA. I found Ron Tonkin’s “Internet sales pricing” to be more close to a car’s actual worth. We ended up finding our car we wanted (Honda Pilot exl) in CA. private party for exactly what we wanted to spend- ( still cheaper to fly and drive home then we could get at a dealer) so we didnt buy from a dealership…I would recommend him and he will work hard to find what you want and not feed you any lines or be dishonest—
Thank you Stephan! Sorry we didnt purchase from you but will send people your way!!!:D
forget to clarify it was the “Ron Tonkin used car center” I didnt like- on Canyon Rd.
😀 I am very Happy with the purchase of our 2007 Honda Element – this has been my dream car since 2005 and though we considered a new one, I really liked the features in the older models and was impressed with how they maintained there drivability and overall value. I have had so many compliments on it already and the experience at the dealership made my husband and I feel really good about this purchase, and as most people can attest, this is not always the case. We really enjoyed Rita and the Gentleman that does the financing was a “real person” who made a lasting impression of someone we would enjoy haveing a glass of wine with! I don’t usually do surveys and this kind of thing but really want others to know that this was a great experience and we are so very happy with our purchase and experience at Ron Tonkon Honda. Go there, ask for Rita, buy your dream car and enjoy the finance man that makes it all happen!
In short: these people are well packaged, very smooth liars. The pretense of “a family run, ethical car dealership” could not be farther from the truth. Getting the parts I paid for on the vehicle was absolutely 😮 madness. The car was advertised as another vehicle altogether and from the $4,000 in repairs during my first 32 days of ownership….108 point vehicle inspection? Not possible. After 32 days of service, the oil is low and the tires were 😮 uneven. They didn’t even check. 😡 Then, when they were to put me into another car-they added on to the deal, refused to acknowledge the $3,000 just paid for the down, and told me I was upside down on a car that was “WAY below BLUE BOOK….a STEAL!” 32 days prior. Upside down on my loan?
Handed the Service Department the Key to my rental and after the madness in Sales to get a DECENT RUNNING vehicle, the Enterprise Rental car (supposedly paid for by Ron Tonkin and charged top my Credit Card) was mysteriously DAMAGED. What is the game? :devil( Mess with someone enough that they never come back, ever? No such luck. That is what Attorneys are for-Bad Business Practice-Ron Tonkin Honda Gresham-Lemons and Smiles/:(
I’m writing this minutes after getting off the phone with their GM Pat. I had reserved a Base model Honda Fit a month ago w/ no options. We agreed on a price, in writing via email. I gave them a $500 deposit and they even sent me a VIN # of the vehicle.
Literally an hour before I’m about to pick my wife up from work and get our new car, I get a call from our sales person, Mark telling me that there was a mix up in the service area and they added some optional accessories to the car, some of which can’t be removed! Not only that, but it’s $600 worth of crap that we don’t want, never asked for and were told when we reserved the car, we weren’t getting! They even offered to remove the mats and trunk tray bringing it down to $400 over what I’d agreed to pay.
When I talked to the manager about it, he agreed that it was a mix up on their end, but that we’d still have to pay for it, or wait another month for the next shipment. He stated that they were popular cars and most people want options with them. They’ll probably sell my car to some sucker in the next week.
The thing that kills me, is they had a satisfied, guaranteed sale (with a first time car buyer no less) 99% of the way complete and they’re willing to let it go.
And over $400 RETAIL!
I may have been a special case, and this may have been a rare screw up on their part. This was an opportunity for them to show that they’ll take care of their customers if things get weird (as they can easily get weird, when buying a car) – and decided not to.
Anyway, I’m doing the only thing I have the power to do as a consumer. Write this review of them and post it on as many public forums and tell as many people as I possibly can.
If you live in Oregon, please don’t go to a Ron Tonkin Dealership. Buy elsewhere.
I had a horrible, horrible experience
