Having just moved to the area I began doing my homework on test-driving a new Odyssey by reading online reviews of the Honda dealerships in the area. A couple searches turned up very negative reviews of the other dealership on the penisnsula, and I quickly resolved never to go there. I did not immediately find Peninsula Honda; I think I had to do a Google search to realize “the other guys” weren’t the only Honda dealership on the north side. I decided to give Peninsula a call despite not knowing anything about them.
It turned out to be the best car-buying decision I’ve ever made. I went out to the dealership on a couple of occasions as I was in the market for both an Odyssey and an Accord. The Odyssey was the first order of business, however, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the helpful sales agent who assisted me, Richard Jones. It was like having an old friend talk with me about some interest we shared. Instead of pounding me with facts about the vehicle continuously and pressuring me to buy the car Richard offered to show me the basic features of the van, which I accepted, and he answered my questions with a very relaxed manner. When I told Richard I wanted to wait a bit before seriously considering a purchase he didn’t bat an eye. He happily gave me his card and let me know he was happy to answer any questions I had as I went through my self-devised shopping process. I emailed him a couple times with questions over the next couple months, and he promoptly and courteously replied with the correct answer the same day each time. (I always make it a point to ask salesmen questions I already know the answer to as a way to check their honesty.)
By the time I was ready to commit to an Odyssey EX I was hopeful Richard and company would be able to find what I wanted, as Honda tightly controls proliferation of its Odysseys. As it turned out, they had exactly one EX on the way, and even luckier for me it was the color my wife wanted (Celestial Blue Metallic). Richard took the time to show me the Honda reports that showed what vehicles they were getting from the factory in Alabama that month, the week my van would be built, an estimate of when the van would arrive and what I could expect the rest of the way. The process went EXACTLY as Richard said it would, and I received regular progress updates. Richard was so diligent and attentive it was as if I were the only customer Richard had to work for.
This was a cash transaction, so I can’t comment on their F and I practices, but both F and I agents I dealt with were friendly enough and neither seemed put out with my reading every word of the four or five pages I had to sign to complete the purchase. In response to one of my questions one of the F and I folks mentioned to me Peninsula is a family-owned business, and that the low-pressure, friendly atmosphere is a top-down philosophy. They realize this friendly, no-pressure approach often costs them sales to the high-pressure guys across town, but would rather have happy customers who come back than disgruntled ones who don’t. How often do you find a dealership that really “gets it” like this?
I went in to get my permanent license plates yesterday, and Richard excused himself from a nice couple he was assisting to come over and ask how my wife enjoyed the van and how things were going. Honda does an after-purchase survey for its vehicles, but the kindness Richard showed me can’t be faked. You can tell when someone is working for ratings, money, or some ulterior motive and when they truly enjoy helping people. Richard Jones truly enjoys helping people.
As a result of this experience I not only give Peninsula Honda my highest recommendation, I intend to give them my business for many years to come. Do yourself a favor: if you’re considering a Honda and you’re in Virginia or northern North Carolina make the drive to Peninsula Honda and ask for Richard Jones. It will be worth the drive.
