I purchased a 2005 Toyota Prius from Mike at this dealer in Aug of 2005.
I went in to the dealership knowing exactly what I wanted and how much I should be paying for it, so when the dealer started asking me questions about how much I wanted to pay per month I was able to tell him what I wanted to pay for the car and that I would explore my own financing.
The dealer told me that he didn’t have the car I wanted (not a surprise, as the Prius was, and still is, hard to come by) but that if I was willing to accept a different color he had one coming in next week that he could sell me (this was the 3rd week of Aug). So I accepted and moved on.
Before I walked into the dealership I had called State Farm (my insurance agent) to get a quote on an auto loan. They ran my credit and determined they could offer me an APR of 5.25% and the loan representative even commented that I have very good credit for someone my age (I was 24 at the time). With this information in hand I figured I would talk to the financing guy at the dealership and see if he could make me a better offer.
After waiting for what seemed like for ever for the financing people to run my credit I went into the office where I was told “I have some bad news for you, you’re credit is less than perfect and you don’t have much of a credit history so then best we can offer you is 9.75%” Now of course I was floored, not more than 4 hours earlier I was told that my credit was very good.
So I told the finance guy that I would shop the loan around on my own. So he proceeded to try to up-sell me on everything from window etching to fabric protection and after each item he would hand me a form to sign so I could decline each. After all the up-sells were done he handed me a rather length form and said “sign here.” This being the first form that didn’t come with a 10 minute sales pitch I asked him “and what is this form?” to which he responded “your loan contract.” This was a surprise to me since I had already told him I didn’t want his loan. So I told him again that I was going to shop it around myself as his APR was pretty horrible. He responded “I thought it was my job to shop this around, are you telling me that I’m bad at my job.” At this point I told him “yeah I guess I am” and explained to him about already having a loan offer. He told me that my offer was impossible and that it must be a mistake, but I declined his offer anyway and went on my way.
The next the financing guy called me back and told me that a local bank was offering a “labor day loan sale” and that he could beat State Farm’s offer, which I accepted since I figured any savings is good, even if it means that financing guy gets the commission.
So a week passes and I still don’t have a car, now we’re getting closer to the end of Aug and the dealer calls me up and tells me that he would like to get the paper work finished that week so it can be processed by the end of the month. I figured no problem, the car should be here any day now anyway, so I go in and fill out the paper work. Upon completion the dealer tells me that he’s going to need the remaining down payment on the car before the 31st so he can get the paperwork in. Now this was the first he had mentioned needing the money before the car arrived, so I pitched a fuss, and he told me that he could sell me the car unless I got him all the money before the 31st. This seemed fishy so I declined and asked for my deposit back, which of course was “impossible”
Finally the dealer caved and told me that he would get management to “make and exception” for me.
Moving on from both of these annoyances it was another 2 weeks before the car arrived (2 weeks later than I was promised). And I drove away with my new car. A few days later I got a survey from Toyota about my purchase experience, in which I told the story above.
Once my survey reached the dealer I got a call from Mike who told me that this survey made him look pretty bad and told me he thought everything went great, and urged me to fill out a new survey that reflected that. I told him that I was just telling the truth and that I would never buy a car from them again.
