I have owned six Toyota Camrys, the first five were purchsed from Cramer in Venice, the last one from Germain, I received a letter that I could trade in my 2010 for a 2012 with no money down and possible reduce my payments. I went to Germain, was approached by Paul, explained the letter I had gotten, he pleaded ignorance, went inside to check with someone. Came back out and said they new nothing about it. Why send a letter out and not inform your sales people? The salesman was abrupt and rude. I pulled out of your lot, pulled into the Honda dealership and purchased a 2012 CRV.. Love it. Will never recommend your dealership to anyone.
I used the internet “contact dealers” service on Carsdirect dot com and Edmonds dot com to get pricing from several different Toyota dealers. When you use those services (free!), your contact info goes to a bunch of different dealerships and they know you are getting prices from other area dealers so the prices you get quoted are often much lower than what you get walking in to a dealership.
This dealership, however, sent me back an email quoting full MSRP price for a Toyota Corolla at $18,012. No other dealership I was contacted by through this whole car buying process quoted me an MSRP price because we all know that price is total crap so why bother? Since I had another instant price quote from another dealer coming in at $14,383 for the same vehicle Germain was pricing at $18,012, I sent an email back to John Tyburski stating that another dealership had quoted me a price thousands less than their quote, plus I mentioned that their tv ads they are running is pricing that same car at $13,999 so what was the story with the ridiculous $18,012 price quote? He corrected me and said their tv ad advertised the car at $13,490, not $13,999 and then wrote why was I quoting what another dealer had quoted? Well, duh… um, because I could go somewhere else and save 4 grand off what you quoted me? Could that be why?
Just because a dealership has an internet department doesn’t mean they understand an internet customer, and this experience is a classic example of that. We have the typical dealership mentality of starting high ($18,012) they way they do when you walk into a dealership, but this dinosaur’s mentality of that approach does not work with an internet customer because those customers have already done their research on places like Edmonds dot com where you can use their “true market pricing” feature and see what the cars are actually selling for in the area. There is so much information out there on the internet for pricing that a dealer just has to be insane to quote an MSRP price to an internet customer. Obviously the dinosaur does not understand the competitive nature of shopping online and is trying to apply the same sleazy tactics used in showrooms with walk in customers. Clearly this dealership was going to be a total waste of my time and I just moved on. I don’t know why they bother spending a lot of money on TV ads promoting one price and then quoting a much higher price when a consumer inquires about the car. It makes me not trust anything they say and it is everything I hate about the experience of looking at cars– the overpricing, the condescending attitude, the bait and switch, etc. Why put yourself through that when you can just solicit prices from every other dealership and play them off each other on price until you get the best price before you even set foot in the showroom? That is the only way to go in my opinion. It saves hours of hassle and Germain seems to be all about the hassle based on my email exchanges with this dealership. I would not even consider driving to the dealership after those emails because it was clear they were going to be jerking me around on price and I had already received much better offers from every other area Toyota dealership. Bah!
