The retractable hard top on my SL500 stopped closing 4 times in 3 years. This amounted to about 50 operations between failures. Not good. The first 3 times I took the car in, they found a problem and “fixed” it. However, the top eventually stopped closing after each repair.
Today the top stopped closing AGAIN. The last time the car was in for this problem they “adjusted limit switch S117.” The time before that they claim to have replaced the same switch. Since the car is now OUT of warranty, I decided to check this switch myself. Access was simple, and what did I find? THE “ADJUSTMENT” THEY MADE THE LAST TIME AMOUNTED TO WRAPPING CLOTH TAPE AROUND THE SWITCH ACTUATOR! Yes, their “adjustment” was to put tape on the problem! Of course, the tape eventually got loose and the top stopped working. I replaced the tape with a more permanent rubber material and the problem went away.
So- Mercedes Benz of Pleasanton evidently thinks that we are so stupid that they can do a fix on a $95k car that I would not do on my bicycle. Who would know? Makes you wonder what else they might assume that the customer will “never know”.
BTW- I have PICTURES for anyone who doubts this.
The “service consultants” who interface with the customers are great. Julia and Rick really tried to help. Too bad “repair” in the shop means a piece of tape.
