Overall the associates were nice and seemed excited about getting me into the car I was interested in. I can’t really complain about that much. They were friendly and responsive.
Issues: Almost an insulting quote on my trade-in. KBB puts the value at $3200. Offered me $700 because of a supposed, “problem with the ‘lifters’,” which makes no sense since the valves, valve springs and timing belt were done less about 20k miles ago. I know you can’t base everything on Blue Book but, they did for their car and mine, with 1 week old tires is worth far more than $700.
Second issue: Took the car to an ASE Certified Master Technician in my family (unfortunately for the dealer) to check it out. We found a leak in the power steering pump. What would eventually have to be replaced at cost for $500.
Third issue: There was a leak from what looked like it was coming out of the timing belt cover. If the oil has saturated the timing belt we’re looking at the timing belt being weakened and possibly breaking which, if that happens we’re talking about bent valves on top of the belt and pulleys and gears and pumps. Total cost of that repair at cost: roughly $1500.
4th issue: Car was just barely under what their book value lists. $300 under. Not angry about the price. Price is assuming excellent condition. The front grille was cracked, front bumper scratched up, a crumby touch up paint job, scratches on the side – plenty of things cosmetically that disqualify it from Excellent Condition, let alone the repairs that HAVE to be made. Other than that the car was clean, I will say that.
5th issue: After bringing the car back with the mechanical issues discovered I was told the old line of, “We’re already losing money,” so I pretty much knew they weren’t going to go anywhere with the price. Then they told me the offer for my car which was less than appealing. So they wanted me to pay top dollar for a car that needed $2000 in repairs.
Then they asked if I wanted to buy a $2400 warranty. That alone isn’t that bad but when the issues come up I’m more than sure that the warranty company will tell me that it was neglected by the previous owner and more than likely I wouldn’t be covered under the warranty. So now I’m looking at paying $13k for the car plus finance charges which will put it up to $14k plus $2400 for a warranty plus what is more than likely going to be worthless AND pay for the repairs that are going to be needed totaling around $2000 at cost. So I’m looking at $18,000 for a car that was worth $10,000 with all of it’s issues and my car is supposedly worth $2500 less than book value because of made up issues.
Then they told me that there is nothing they can do to fix it because they missed it on the initial inspection. They dropped the price to $12700. I understand that they aren’t there to give me a car for nothing. And I expected to have a low-ball quote on my trade-in. I’m not naive about the business end of it.
Basically the reason I’m writing this is because if anyone is looking for a car from any dealer, I’m sure not just this one, have it looked at by someone who really knows what they’re doing. They told me maybe they’ll be able to sell it to someone who doesn’t know much about cars. Nice. I told them if they fix the problems call me. The diagnosis was free. I guess I got to drive it for a while. I still want the car, just not the problems, and I would buy it if it was either fixed or reduced so that I can have it fixed.
