This is the 5th car I have purchased in my life and by far the worst car dealer I have ever come across.
I purchased the Honda Civic EX-CVT from on 05/25/2018 at the emailed quote price after sitting down with Mr. Tom Mac for about 3 hours. The quote was sent by Spreen Honda after I signed up with TrueCar.com. I thought I got a good deal but I was screwed over by the senior sales manager, Brandon Shaw by loading some unnecessary extra add ons before I was ready to sign the paperwork as follows
1. Security System for $1295
2. Appearance Protection (Paint Protection) Plan for $995
3. Expensive Wheel Locks for $125 (should have been charged as quoted $56 on Honda Website)
4. Honda Care for $650
I asked for Honda Care but I did not ask for the Security System, Appearance Protection and Wheel Locks. These options were pushed down my throat even when I did not ask for them. The sales manager Brandon Shaw mentioned that I could not buy any car without these options.
When I reviewed The Car Sticker Price closely later, I found out that this car comes with a standard security system as mentioned on the sticker. So why did the sales manager Brandon Shaw take advantage of me by charging me $1295 for a security system which was part of standard package.
Why was I charged $995.00 for Appearance Protection (Paint Protection) Package when I asked Mr. Tom Mac (salesman) & Brandon Shaw (sales manager) to show me cars without a Paint Protection package so I could compare them before making a purchase decision? They mentioned that all cars at this dealership have Paint Protection Package which they provide and not the Honda Company. So I had to forcefully buy this option and I was not given a choice.
Eventually I emailed Honda Company about my concerns and they replied as follows
Dear Steve ,
Thank you for contacting Honda Automobile Customer Service. We are sorry to hear that you were sold services that you did not need.
It is important to keep in mind that all dealerships are independently owned and operated. Because all dealers are independently owned and operated, they are responsible for any representations made about products and services sold in their facilities or by their staff.
Honda only works with Honda Care regarding vehicle service contracts. Honda Care does not provide any paint protection programs. We do not recommend modifying the vehicle in any manner including the installation of an after market alarm system. We would recommend that you discuss these concerns with the sales manager if you have not already.
Please respond with the name of the dealership where you purchased the vehicle so that we may file a complaint on your behalf.
Kind regards,
Honda Automobile Customer Service
Case # XXXXXXX
I contacted Spreen Honda to resolve this issue and they were not willing to resolve it and explained to me that I got a very good deal, after screwing me over this deal.
Finally I have filed complaints with California State Attorney General and FTC. These Government Agencies only take action when enough people have filed complaints against the dealer.
The email you will receive from their internet sales team will say: “Many dealerships will give you a very low unrealistic price, only for them to increase it later on! We do not play games at Spreen Honda.” Unfortunately that is exactly what Spreen Honda does, they quote you an unrealistic low price, and then they play games with you when you come in. I wanted so much to have that “no games” experience as I HATE haggling, I just want a fair quoted price. They add an $1,800 “security package” and $1,400 “appearance protection package” too all of their cars on the lot. This is what was told to me by one of the sales managers named John. These are used as leverage to make up their low ball offer they get you in the door with (if you go through TrueCar, costco, USAA, etc.) The security package is a $30 shock sensor added to the factory alarm and it “comes with” theft protection insurance, if your car is stolen and deemed a total loss they’ll pay you the difference of your insurance payout up to MRSP of a new vehicle. So basically they are making you purchase *absurdly* marked up insurance by adding a $30 piece to the vehicle that they will tell you they cannot or will not remove (“It is already on the vehicle sir”). The appearance protection package is the same story, armor all leather protectant (or scotch guard spray on fabric), and a wax on your paint, and you guessed it, it “comes with” a service that will get out any stain inside, or remove any blemished outside (caused by normal use). The product is “already added to the vehicle, and no sir we cannot and will not take it off.” I’m sad to say that “it is already added to the vehicle” for the protection package was a lie in my experience. After I purchased the car they had put the greasy armor all all over the interior of the vehicle. They told me that they “re-apply” it at purchase, but I had just test drove the same exact car the day before, it had not been on the lot more than a week according to the sales manager, and it did NOT have any armor all product applied to it. Along the entire process I kept asking for these items to be removed stating I did not want them. They discounted them, slightly, and I finally caved (and I feel very ashamed for doing so). Lastly, if you come in from TrueCar, USAA, or Costco, you can forget dealing with a non-pressure internet sales or fleet manager, they will funnel you in through their normal pushy sales channel just as if you had walked in the front door. The front sales personnel are not aware of any conversations or quotes you will receive before you get there. Don’t make the mistake like I did and purchase unnecessary items you don’t even want, my previous car had been totaled and I needed it replaced asap, but I should have just paid for a rental and gone to a different dealer. Save yourself some stress, PLEASE, and do not go to spreen.
I go there to look for a car. At first it looked like they were going to get me a good deal they even compared the price of the car to truecar.com to get me the best price so I thought. Then we do some numbers with 1g down and the car payment was going to be 400 a month. It was a little higher then what I was hoping for so I walked away. I was going to come back and schedule an appointment with Erman I think his name was but he flaked out and wasn’t there. I go over my savings and my check book because I really want this car. I go back and offer 3g down figuring my car payments would be less. First I am waiting all day Friday for the good news and hear nothing. Toward the end of the day I call the guy I was working with Gabriel and he still hasn’t heard back if I’m approved or not. So I ask him to call me if he doesn’t hear back by the time he gets off work which once again a FAKE I mean flake and doesn’t call me back. He finally calls me Saturday and says the loans approved but the car payments are going to be 500. I’m sorry I am not stupid and I can do math. I told them I will not buy a car from them because it seems like their just trying to rip me off. I would NOT recommend this place unless you want the same ‘service’. WORST car buying experience ever and I will NEVER RECOMMOND this FLAKY FAKE PLACE!!!!!!
Buyer beware of spreen Honda has to offer. If I can return the car without a loss I absolute will do. I upgrade the package to include the remote starter and I got a different brand of product not honda. The sale manager said that they didn’t install the (honda brand) remote starter at spreen. Beware to have every detail written before sign any paper work. DO NOT BUY FROM SPREEN HONDA,
I would stay as far away from this dealership as you can. First, let me say that our salesperson was new to the dealership and the business and we had absolutely no issues with the way he treated us. This was a USAA Internet deal and the price was honored. However a one year old model car we were going to trade in was valued at a KBB auction price that was over $5000 less than wholesale dealer book price. They refused to factor in options on my trade in like the navi saying they don’t get you any better price. Our USAA quote stated that the special Honda finance rates were in effect, then the salesperson was politely telling us that he wasn’t sure that would be honored. I worked in the car business for 10 years, I’m an attorney, and we buy at least one new car a year. This is the worst I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot.
03/18/2012 I received an internet price quote from Vu on a 2012 civic for 16,195.00. Price sounded great so I go in and they were right, the price was honored at 16,195 which I was surprised. Until you go to financing and they try to screw you over with outrages interest rates. They say they can not combine internet pricing with the 1.9% finance offer from honda. BS! they said the payments would be 295 for 72 months..thats over 21k in payments! who in their right mind with excellent credit would ever pay 25% more than the original purchase price. This location just tries to do what they can to get you in their doors and finds ways to increase your cost. watch the numbers and make sure they are what they should be, this place is bad news
I had a horrible time with the financing part of the whole car buying experience with Spreen Honda. The finance director Mr. Derek Parsons added a whole lot of optional items to my invoice that wasn’t discussed beforehand. He made it sound that he was going to hook me up with an anti theft device for my car but not informing me that the actual price of the said device was already added to the final invoice.
Horrible and rude manager. Told us if we weren’t coming in and sitting down then have a nice day. When went in to complain about rudeness got even worse treatment. I buy a new car every year and I will never buy one from here again!
I purchased my new HONDA INSIGHT EX at another Honda dealer one week after my experience at Spreen Honda, and was able to get the price I wanted for my trade and a great price on the car. My experience with Spreen Honda was a disaster from the get go. I work as an accountant, and I know the intricate details of a lease contract and how they work. For starters, Spreen Honda would only pay off my trade (2006 Ford Taurus SEL in excellent condition with 110,000 miles) which was about $1800. When I was finally able to negotiate the Kelly Blue Book trade in value ($3,800) for my car, I was suddenly told they had been using last years lease factor of (.00011) instead of the current lease factor of (.002). This means the interest rate on the lease jumped from 0.26% to 4.8%. If they were using the lease factor they claimed they mistakenly used, my lease payment should have been around $180/month instead of the $266/month they quoted me. Once they calculated the correct lease factor rate, the payment jumped to $304/month. Dishonesty abounds, and all this after my wife and I sat in the showroom for over an hour waiting to work out a deal. As an apology for NOT WILLING to make a deal and making us wait in the showroom for over an hour, we got a $25 Target gift card. When I got home, I re-ran my figures and came to the realization that Spreen Honda was rolling the equity of my trade ($2,000) back into the lease price of the vehicle. Spreen claims to have never lost a deal over price. Well, not only did they lose my business, they’ve lost a customer for life.
I’m so happy and proud to say that I am a new owner of a 2011 red 2 door Honda civic. I was given Amanda Rees’s name by a employee at a nearby Toyota dealership. I’ll start of by telling you this car buying has been a long and tough battle between my father and me. We were not agreeing on anything and I had been to almost every dealership in California from Volvo to Toyota!! What I wanted was a Honda accord coupe. The problem was my father was buying the car. When I went to see Amanda about the car with my father, I can’t tell you how great Amanda was. I ended up getting a civic. My father and I were so impressed with the customer service. My father even mentioned that he has never had a dealership call after the purchase was made to check on how the car was. And go to such a great effort to make sure we were happy. Amanda made our purchase, enjoyable, fast, and delightful. I must tell you one more thing. I was going to have the Spreen Honda sign on the license plate of the car removed, and my father insisted that I didn’t because I should be proud that I bought my car at such a great place. And my father is a very hard man to please. Thank you again and I will be a true customer for life. Everyone at Spreen Honda went out of their way to make sure I was happy.
A promise to match price with another dealer was not kept. After confirming the price over the internet and the telephone, I drove almost one hour to the dealer. After completing the paperwork and taking a test drive, they declined to honor the price match. When I left, they followed me to my car and said they would honor it. Later, they decided not to honor the price match. Unable to trust them, I left the dealership.
I would not do business with these people. Their behavior was foolish.
Over the internet and the telephone, Spreen Honda promised to match the price of another local dealer on a Honda Pilot. After I drove 46 miles to the dealer, filled out paperwork and test drove the vehicle, they said they wouldn’t match the price. I left the building. They followed me to my car and told me they would match the price. Time passes as the prepare the new car then, they changed their mind again and said they wouldn’t match the price. Having lost all confidence in their word, I left the dealership.
I would not do business with these people. They can’t be trusted.
Read the other warnings about them on other websites.
They got a customer for life who will recommend Spreen Honda to everyone I know. Make sure you ask for Amanda Rees. She’ll hook you up! 😀
Great service at Spreen Honda, I likes the overall experience and patience, there was no pressure at all to buy, other dealerships around hound you and make you feel pressured to buy, Andrew was great and i would reccomend this dealership to anyone!:p
Great service, friendly salesman-Matt Humphrey-didn’t pressure me into buying a car. Matched me with a car to fit my lifestyle, quick financing, great price, WAY below what I expected. Will def buy another car from this dealer 🙂
I don’t know where to begin! Service was quick, friendly, accurate and sooooo polite. Matt Humphrey was my salesperson after being redirected to him through the front desk agent. I was tired of spending too much on gas and replacement parts for my cadillac, so I became interested in the new Fit. PERFECT MATCH: I admit, I didn’t really need his help because I knew what I wanted, but it made the sale easier and I got such a great price, I wasn’t expecting to get the car for what I did – Matt made sure I got financed before I got my hopes up too high and was awesome. I have to admit, I was surprised when he offered me an extended warranty because I was buying a new car, but boy I’m glad he helped convince me that it was best 🙂 5/5 stars I will definitely be looking for a car for my family sometime soon :
I went to Spreen Honda in Loma Linda a few times test driving cars I potentially want to buy and talked and some verbal deals. I asked them about cash for clunker and the requirement and i reviewed the requirement from the Government program. I return later on in the week 10AM with the clunker to trade in. I arrived found the person i talked to last and I waited for 30 minutes for. I then quickly start the paper work and sign the big stack of papers. The salesman i spoke to changes the deal and RAISES the promised price, he also charged me an extra $600 for cash for clunker program (illegal/unethical) he said its for paper work, after 3 hours all the paper work was done and I am paying for the car in FULL in cash. My sales man left me sitting there for 20 minutes and returned “Your inline for the finance department” I patiently wait for another hour. I asked the sales man whats taking so long, he said “its the finance department” like that really explains why?. I’m pissed off and fustrated as I have already sat there for 4 HOURS. Then the 5th hour rolls around. The sales man comes to me oh your clunker is SAVAGED we can’t do the deal.
In the Cash for Clunker program no where does it say savaged car is not qualified. The sales man had my title to my clunker with big words on it SAVAGED and he didn’t see it???????? and he tells me after 5 HOURS !!!!!!!!!!!!! i got so mad i left.
1. They broke the promised deal
2. They charge and illegal $600 extra just because it is a clunker and in the gov program it says DEALERSHIP CANNOT RAISE PRICE for cash for clunker program
3. Their rude and provided nothing during the 5 hour wait.
4. No appology
5. All sales man are in Baggy loose T-SHIRTS and jeans and tennis shoes !!!
6. They did not know the rules to Cash for Clunker
7. Did not answer my calls
8. TOOK MY INSURANCE PAPER and didn’t give it back
9. WASTED 5 HOURS and having me sit in this damn cubical
I left and went to Metro Honda in Montclair, it was night and day, people were nice and caring, professionally and well dressed, more selection. Staff at Metro Honda was shocked how Spreen Honda treated me.
Never going back to Spreen Honda, just read complaints online on Spreen Honda its always about dishonest, RUDE, unethical practices.!!!
