I need to warn you that they are not exactly forthcoming with the truth. Don’t be fooled by Mike Ford’s Christianese. I was and got took. The car I bought had been wrecked. I knew the front bumper had been replaced but I didn’t know all the other work that had been done. I would have an outside inspector go over any purchase you are considering from any dealership. I didn’t and my bad. My passenger door rubs when you open it and I distinctly remember Mike changing his mind and not letting me open the door. He opened it for me on the passenger side. He had to know it would rub and didn’t want me to feel it. Dino is the only honest man I met down there. They are the quintessential car stealership! When you think of all the ways you can get scammed at a car dealership, they have them perfected. I don’t know how Mike sleeps at night…
I was curious about electric cars since my friend drives a Nissan Leaf. She told me she really liked the BMW i3 a lot so we headed over to Bert Smith BMW to see about a test drive. We walked in and were referred to the salesman who drove that type of car. Michael G. took us out in his own vehicle because there were none available on the lot at the time. He was very friendly and patient answering all our questions and pointing out the features he likes about the car. Made of all recycled materials. LED lights. Green car of the year 3 years in a row. 5 star safety rating. Spunky space age design. High seat and amazing visibility. I really loved the car. I am considering leasing one in the not too distant future.
All in all it was a pleasant experience and I was impressed with Michael’s willingness to let me drive his personal vehicle even though he knew I was not going to buy or lease right away.
After you sign the papers, forget about it–they don’t/won’t care about you at all! And all this after purchasing our sixth car! It wasn’t even our salesmen or the person handling the loan(s), its after the fact that we have experienced most of our issues. Like I said, once they get you to sign the paperwork, the customer service goes out the door. Our most recent purchase from Bert Smith Subaru, was the biggest lemon. The day after we drove the car off the lot, the clutch went out. Then, a few days later, the radiator blew. They agreed to fix the clutch, but refused to repair the radiator. They claimed it was a loose hose, but the car continued to overheat until we finally replaced the fans. We have put over $1000 in repairs in the car, and it has only been a few months! Oh, and the best part is they stopped taking our calls after we requested to return the car under the FL. Lemon Law. My son-in-law purchased his car from the same dealership, just prior to my sons purchase, and the AC compressor/ motor blew within a month. Which by-the-way, he was quoted $1000 with labor to repair. I realize these are used cars, but Bert Smith should do a COMPLETE vehicle checks before placing cars on the lot. Not just a look over. I’m not sure if the “junk cars” are sent to that lot (the cars that don’t make the cut for Bert Smith BMW’s used lot), but it seems like too much of a coincidence to me! The BMW service department is a whole separate story–I’ll spare the details, but they to do not stand by their word. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
NATALIE SWAIN IS THE REASON WE KEEP GOING BACK
Recall service requested. Left car fo 2-weeks, no call-back on status. Returned after being overseas 2-weeks – service rep declared car not in US system, needs to be registered with BMW USA. Asked for assistance in this – told not Smith BMW problem. Told Smith BMW you are a rep of BMW, they declined to assist. Took business 20 minutes norh, they registered the car in 20 minutes with BMW USA and serviced the recall ASAP. Smith BMW will not be getting my business for any vehicle consideration, sales or service and I have referred 15 people to the other BMW dealer who assisted me. Not Smith BMWs problem.
SALES: Now almost two years later, I still feel robbed. They gave me a decent trade in for my beloved Saab, pressured me into a wonderful 335 convertible that I thought was too much car for me. They told me to take the car, and if it didn’t work out, come back and we’d get something else. Two or three days later, I went back. Oh, I was welcomed with open arms. I selected a 328. NOW I was trading the 335 for the 328. I feel robbed of over $10,000, which I am still paying back. On fixed income, it’s not easy. In Florida, or at least with respect to auto sales, there is no such thing as a cooling-off period. They said it referred only to home sales. I had such bad feelings about the 328 that about six months later, I traded it in at another BMW dealer which also was a MINI Cooper dealer, where I was treated well. When I related my horrible experience at Bert Smith, they said that Bert Smith should have just backed up the deal, and given me the trade in for the Saab as if the 335 deal never happened. Ferman treated me so well that when my daughter was in Afghanistan, with her PoA and agreement, bought her a gorgeous 650i convertible. A year after having the MINI, I was rear-ended, and got an ’04 Z4 that had some issues. The dealership (not a BMW) took the car to Bert Smith, much to my chagrin because I hated them so, but they were the nearest BMW dealer. What can Bert Smith do to make this right? Very simple. Go thru the paperwork, calculate the price of the 328, use the Saab as trade in, and give me a refund.
SERVICE: The service department is a totally different world from that which I experienced in Sales. Matt Sanford was wonderful in knowing what was wrong with the Z4, told me what would be involved, costs, time, etc. In my book, Matt walks on water. I should soon receive an email about reviewing the work, and I will happily give him tens.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. My car was in the shop for two weeks, a little longer than anticipated, but okay since they gave me a very nice loaner. My key chain had an antique Indian head penny in a metal frame, solidly installed. When I got the car back, the frame was there, but the penny was missing. No way could that coin fall out. It had to have been worked at. Everyone denied any knowledge. When someone called me about the coming review, I told them they had a problem. Something was seriously wrong when something is taken, and no one knows anything about it. I truly believed them when they said they didn’t know anything about it. One mechanic knew. It took a while for the woman to understand what I was telling her, I guess because it was a little hard to believe. The key chains were given to me by the MINI dealer; one had the Indian head penny, the other has a buffalo nickel. They meant a lot to me. Evidently, someone else found it intriguing. Someone who worked in the shop has it. Okay, it’s only a penny, but it was a very special thing.
We saw the car on Bert Smith’s website. We called David and he was friendly and very knowledgeable about the car. He had just taken the car in trade and supplied me with all the history of the car. He was extremely helpful and not pushy. He gave us a super price, and a great trade in value. We love the car and anyone that wants to buy a car from Bert Smith you should ask for David Wilson. He is very professional and helpful. We will be back as well as all of our family and friends to buy all of our cars from him in the near future.
DO NOT BUY A CAR FROM BERT SMITH! I walked out of the dealership after experiencing numerous fraudulent sales transaction issues. Specifically, the dealership orally inflated my appraisal for my vehicle. When the car was appraised, I was told it was appraised for $15K. Only after spending hours in negotiating a final deal, picking out the actual car and sitting in the office was I told that the appraisal figure provided to me over a week prior was wrong and the real valie was$13.5. Of course, they indicated that I would need to come up with the difference if I wanted the car. Additionally, the same sales person who quoted the inflated appraisal rate to me continuously dropped the ball and would not call me back to give me final lease figures. I had to go back into Bert Smith when he was away to demand the figures in writing and see if I was even close to the price point discussed. At that time, they already had my credit info, ran it and knew I qualified for top tier financing. Nonetheless, I had to start the process all over again in negotiations just to have them provide me a lease quote with an inflated money factor. I had to point this out to be able to get a new quote with the money factor I qualified for. The difference was about $30 a month! As indicated above, even though redoing the process was a waste of my billable time, I had managed to pick out a car and negotiate a MSRP/price I would agree to. At that point, when ready to sign the paperwork, they pulled out the “real appraisal” and tried to pressure me pay the difference. It was unbelievable. I simply walked out and told them I will let every professional I know about my experience. I filed a complaint with BMW and will be filing a complaint with the BBB and attorney general’s office for unscrupulous sales tactics. Last night I bought instead a 2012 Volvo C70 at Clearwater Volvo. What an amazingly great experience I had there. The ride is much better than the 3 series BMW, it’s a convertible with all the premier features, comes with free maintenance and guess what…no unscrupulous sales tactics. Do yourself a favor and go to Volvo. The difference you will feel in the sales experience is amazingly different!
I’ve told other dealers about my experience with Bert Smith, and all shook their heads and said they should be shot for the way they treated me. They had given me a fair trade-in value on my Saab. They pressured me into getting a 2007 335i, admittedly a gorgeous car, but way too much for me. Two or three days later, I went back. Oh, were they glad to see me. Said don’t worry, we’ll put you in another car, a 2009 328i sedan. Rather than roll back the first deal, now I was trading in the 335i for the 328i, a significant windfall for them. I felt I was robbed. I tell everyone I meet who will listen.
Terrible business. They try to give you auction value for your trade; don’t budge to auction value on the vehicle their selling. Greg Sullivan is a condescending liar. He disrespects people who don’t buy his bull. Larry the finance Manager shopped 12 different lenders to see who would finance the highest amount with the worst interest rate. Now, I have 12 inquiries on my credit report, which is going to cost me 20+ points on my beacon score. Rik Wuest, their marketing director, made a commitment to look into my complaint AND attempt to salvage a deal. To date, he has done nothing.
Stay away from this business. All they care about is stealing from the hard working people that are looking for a fair deal on a good vehicle.
The worst service ever!don’t go there!
One of Bert Smith’s employees has been all over the news related to the last few company’s he has ran. Seems he always find a problem. I don’t know about you, but if I was buying a vehicle I wouldn’t want to do business with this place if they think its okay to employee this guy.

Google his name, he’s all over the internet under everything from Scam Artist to Rip Off…
Would you buy a car from him? You can reach him or Mr. Smith at 727-527-1111.
DAN G BRANDANO Google this guy he’s a Scam Artist and calls Bert Smith his home.. Nice job Bert….
Upon picking up our vehicle we noticed the black piping around the convertible top rear window was missing. We found it in the trunk, wet, and figured the dealerships automatic car wash ripped it off. In fact, this is exactly what happened. When we pointed this out to the Service Adviser she denied that the dealership even had a car wash, WHICH YOU COULD PLAINLY SEE FROM THE SERVICE ADVISER AREA! When we asked that this dealer-caused damage be repaired, Bert Smith BMW told us “no, the car’s off warranty.”
Yeah, I know, I didn’t get it either.
We pushed the issue and were told “too bad, so sad, you drive an old BMW. You have got to expect this kind of damage.”
???????????????????????????
Run, don’t walk, from this stealership.
P.S. This is the same dealership that, when I ordered a new battery, told me it would take three weeks because it “has to be sent from Germany”.
Interstate installed a new one that morning, from stock, and $27.00 cheaper.
An update: A few days after my post I received a call from someone representing Bert Smith BMW–I didn’t get his name and that is my fault–wanting to review my posted complaint. This person was especially interested why “You waited 2 years to post a complaint about this dealership.” I explained that I has posted, at various locations, my complaints after the incident happened. I only posted to this forum as soon as I discovered the existance of the forum.
We debated the facts of my complaint….to my astonishment the dealership didn’t dispute what happened only to say that, at the time damage was done to our car, the dealership offered to pay 50% of the parts. I explained this was false. At no time was an offer made, either verbal or written, to compensate us for the damage done to the car.
In my humble opinion, the dealers repesentative was just going through the motions, that our satisfaction or disatisfaction with Bert Smith BMW was of no concern.
I mentioned that I do most of the maintanence on our Z-3 and E39. What I can’t do I send to a very good indie shop in Tampa. At that point the air seemed to go out of the conversation.
The dealer rep. then said he would further research the case and get back to us with a solution. That was a month ago. So far, nothing.
I stand by my original post. Avoid the dealership. The Tampa Bay area has better dealers.
I happened to see what appeared to be a good deal on craigslist and followed it to this dealership. Michael Ford greeted me and immediately distracted me by inviting my attention to the shiny door jambs and pillars. The car, in fact, had been re-sprayed. It was an immaculate re-paint, I will be honest about it, but the dealership certainly was not. I am holding the dealership responsible for this breach of trust because the car was not personal property of the unscrupulous Mr. Ford. He either lied to e about it having been maintained throughout it’s previous ownership at Bert Smith or covered up the fact that it had been repainted by Bert Smith who failed to register this major item in the car’s history report. I ONLY found out five months later when I tried to trade the car in and it was discovered to be repainted using a paint-meter.
Also, Michael Ford started out very politely but turned extremely rude when I started negotiating the price. He tried to pass the car off to me without having it cleaned (as promised) as well as without mats (as promised) saying that at the price I was buying the car, I did not qualify for those courtesies. It was only when I complained to their Porsche division manager who happened to be walking by that Mr. Ford came to his senses.
The car has developed several annoying maintenance problems including an oil leak, in the five months that I have owned it. I drive exclusively to work and back in it and my commute is less than 6 miles.
I would NOT RECOMMEND anyone buying from this dealership (BTW, their maintenance division acknowledges the fact the sales department is dishonest because of a couple of false promises made to me by Mr. Ford). I will PARTICULARLY AVOID MICHAEL R. FORD at all cost even if he is fired and starts selling Nissans. I have also filed a grievance against them with BMWNA
They were not helpful and seemed as if they did not want my business. You call once and they tell you one story and then you call again and the story is different. I WOULD NEVER USE THEM FOR SERVICE!!
Nothing but liars and thiefs at the dealership. Would not recommend to my worst enemy…
Think that certified Preowned car from Bert Smith is accident Free ???
YOU Better check again.. I thought mine was until I sold it and the buyer informed me it was in an accident.
Might want to check them service records also.
BUYER BEWARE
Lowered the price on the phone to get me to show up, then added 700 dollar charge to final bill. Lied about what they knew about the car. They told me it had not been in a wreck, but windshield had writing on it that was visible in morning dew that said otherwise. Car battery was dead when they took it out to show me, and promised a new battery would be put into the car. Two weeks later, battery leaves me stranded because they only charged the old one. Avoid these guys, or else you will be sorry.
I dealt with this salesperson as well and found him to be a liar as well. Avoid this dealership altogether, but if you cannot do that, definitely don’t deal with this guy!
6 weeks to get repair done. Nothing but a bunch of liars & cheats. The Service manager named “Ram” will avoid you at all costs, and is the most dishonest individual ever know. The only way I could ever speak to him was to go to the dealership itself & hunt him down. Call BMW North America with any & all issues … at this dealership they are the only ones whom have your interest at heart. Their telephone # is 800-831-1117. I would drive 100 miles out of my way to have my vehicle serviced at Reeves or Fields before I would ever go to Bert Smith.
I had a wonderful experience at Bert Smith VW. I first went and looked at BMWs and found that although I would love to have one, I couldn’t afford it. But the people at Bert Smith listened to me and didn’t try to get me into something I couldn’t afford….they brought me over to the VW area and I fell in love with the EOS. I found that the sales people were very knowlegable and low pressure. I will be going back there for my next car.

Internet Shopping at its finest. *I contacted Bert Smith BMW via the Internet, was contacted by the Internet Manager, worked out all details via email, came in and picked up my pre-owned 2006 Certified BMW and was in and out in about an hour. * Ferman didn’t respond to my price request. *I’ve heard that Reeves was over priced and too proud of their inventory. *Bert Smith’s Internet Department was great.
Thanks guys,
Brian M
Honestly, she was nice to deal with. That is if I were shopping for an outfit at the mall. But I could do without all the giggles when I need my car fixed. Acting as if you’ve known somebody thier whole life does not equate to good service.
Jasmine helped with my broken a/c and had me in and out in 48 hours… The giggling was’t an issue. Why are being so cruel to her in your comments? What do you do for a living? I’m sure if you had to deal with service issues everyday you might try to find a way to keep people smiling.
