One of the worst cases of customer service I have EVER experienced. My wife and I bought an XC90 from Volvo Tinley Park this past winter. Barrington Volvo wouldn’t come down anywhere near the price Tinley Park offered. No real complaint there, just a difference in margins and business practice.
Yesterday (10/1/09) my wife and I dropped her XC90 off at Barrington Volvo to get an oil change and to check a few minor noises. The actual service tech I spoke with was knowledgable and while I had to call him to get an update overall was happy with the actual service performed.
I confirmed that the cashier would be on site until 6pm. I left Oak Brook at ~4:40pm (normal commute of ~45minutes). Due to severe weather and accidents on the roadways at 5:45pm I determined I would be late to pick up the car. I called, asked to speak with the cashier (who was friendly) and asked if I could pay via credit card over the phone. She said that was no problem and asked if I would like the key left in the car or at the sales desk. As I didn’t have a spare key with me I asked if it would be a problem to pick it up at the sales desk. She confirmed that would not be an issue and that the paperwork would be ready upon my arrival.
At 6:22pm I arrived at the dealership and went to the sales desk (note – there were no customers in the building at this time). The person who greeted me was nice enough – got the credit card receipt for me to sign and handed me the key.
As I turn to leave, Franz, says “weren’t you supposed to be here at 6:00pm?”
I responded “Yeah, it took me over an hour and a half to get here – that’s why I called the cashier ahead of time.”
Franz: “well, we are doing you a favor and you really should have been here at 6:00.”
Me: “Wait, a second are you actually hasseling me?”
Franz” “Yes”
Me: “You’ve got to be kidding me, you really want to throw away our service over 20 minutes?”
Franz: “Yeah, it doesn’t matter.” (as Franz is now shoeing me out of the dealership)
Me “I am literally shocked; this car has less than 20,000 miles and you don’t want a chance to service it for the life of the car?”
Franz: “No.”
Franz “You didn’t even buy your car here” “Good night”
Me “Not sure how that makes a difference, if you are servicing the car”
Franz “Good night”
Me “Excuse me are you the manager?”
Franz “What does that matter?”
Me: “I doubt the manager wouldn’t like to lose business”
Franz “It doesn’t matter. Good night” (Door shuts)
Upon arriving at home I find that the license plate holders have been replaced with “Barrington Volvo” holders. Unbelievable. I will NEVER go to that store for sales or service. In fact, I am so torn up by the situation that I would seriously consider ever buying another Volvo. I have had no issues with my Acura and recieve courtesy service every time.
Avoid the Barrington Volvo dealership at all costs.
