I feel saisifted after reading that one.
I believe my car was damaged due to the negligence of the service department at South Hills Honda. They recommend expensive work that doesn’t need to be done while failing to do critical safety related repairs that should be done .
My car was inspected at 80,429 miles. Brakes and rotors were replaced. I was advised that the exhaust system was about to fail, and that, while it passed, I should plan to replace it soon at a cost of several thousand dollars.
2,797 miles later, the left ball joint failed catastrophically. Had it failed a mile sooner, my daughter and I would have been in heavy traffic on Rt 19 and would have been in a bad accident. It is very scary to contemplate how close we came to being badly injured. The tire fell off the car and car landed on the tire. The axle was torn loose and brake line stretched so tight there were fears the ABS brake system was damaged. AAA sent 4 tow trucks before one was able to get the car safely on a flatbed and towed.
South Hills Honda replaced the broken ball joint, axle and brake hose. I asked that they go over the car thoroughly to be sure it would be safe, to please check everything. Dave called me back and said there was some play in the right ball joint and that should also be replaced ( it had been replaced 22,493 miles earlier ) I agreed to that repair. He recommended air and cabin air filters be replaced since they were dirty. I agreed to that repair. He recommended I have the 60,000 mile service done. I declined since it had already been done at 60,000 miles. Dave then recommended I have the 90,000 mile service done, 7,000 miles early. I declined. I asked him about the condition of the exhaust. Dave said it was fine ( I later discovered Dave has only been there a week and didn’t know Keith had advised me it needed replacement).
I pick the car up and it is clearly not right. There is a tapping sound when I brake and when I lift my hands off steering wheel, it pulls to the right. Take it back to South Hills Honda. Dave calls to tell me they re did the alignment and the noise was the rear brakes. The rotors were failing ( rotors that had 2,797 miles of wear).
I told Dave that I was unhappy about this experience. I thought that the ball joint should have been repaired at the time of inspection and been a hundred dollar repair. Instead, they failed to advise me that the car needed an important fix, endangered me and my daughter, and their negligence did $3000 + in damage to my car ($1512.74 for mechanical repairs, $1253.23 for bodywork since the driver’s door barely opened, plus the value of the car was decreased because it no longer has a clean car fax report).
I told Dave that I’d been a loyal client at South Hills Honda for many years and I thought that they should do something to make this right. I told him I would pick the car up that night, and would like him to have some numbers ready for what the service dept would do to make this right, and also what sales would do for me if I traded the car on a new one. Dave handed me off to Glenn ( service).
Glenn told me that ball joints just fail, that it could happen at any time. I said, isn’t that the whole point of an inspection, to check and be sure the car is safe? ( note: there’s actually a study on the PA Dept of Transportation website proving that, yes, keeping cars safe is the whole point of the inspection program, with data to prove it’s needed) Glenn, however, said that was no guarantee, that I could pull out after having an inspection done, hit a manhole cover 3 miles down the road, the slightest impact could cause the ball joint to break at any time and that it was not his fault. ( note: everyone I’ve spoken to who doesn’t work for South Hills Honda says that of course the wear to the ball joint would have been apparent less than 3,000 miles ago)
Glenn told me that ball joint failures happen more often in low mileage cars and that if i drove the car more, it likely wouldn’t have failed. I was flabbergasted and asked, ‘ are you saying this is my fault’? Glenn replied, no, not my fault, exactly, but since it’s a low mileage car, things get stiff. ( note: I drive my daughter to school every day and run errands on weekends. My car is driven at least 6 days a week. I disagree with Glenn’s premise.)
I told Glenn that steering and brakes are important features for me and I want them both to work. I had asked that they make sure the car was safe when i picked it up but when they checked it out for safety they didn’t notice the rotors were failing until I drove it and brought that to their attention. He gave me a free oil change, although I’ve got a filled up punch card that entitled me to that anyways.
I was told by Glenn the pulling to the right was torque (As a woman, apparently I can’t tell the difference between when I accelerate hard and it pulls vs lifting my hands from the wheel after a front end repair/alignment and watching the car drift to the right). I was told the car was aligned for the second time this week, although my receipt just says they checked it. Glenn said the reason Dave kept recommending unnecessary work was that he’s only been there a week and the previous guy Keith put stuff in the computer wrong so Dave doesn’t know what’s already been done. Glenn says Dave isn’t trying to take advantage of me and run up my bill even though it seems that way, Dave’s just trying to help. I tell Glenn this is not my problem, that’s his problem to sort out employee and computer issues. My problem is that they recommend expensive unneeded repairs while failing to do critical safety repairs.
Ask Glenn what he’s going to do to make this right. He says he’s not charging me for the rotor turning, that a manufacturer defect led to the parts failure and now he has to do lots of work to go back to manufacturer and collect from them. So now not only did the freshly inspected ball joint fail, the freshly inspected and replaced rotors also failed and I’ve made a lot of extra work for Glenn.
My 13 yr daughter and frequent passenger described to Glenn what the brakes were doing. He told her ‘ You have no place in this conversation and your opinion is irrelevant’’. Yes, he actually said that.
Glenn told me that the mechanics are paid by the job, that they get x amount for doing an inspection and a guy who works fast earns more, a guy who is slow and completes fewer jobs earns less. One of the other car guys not employed by Honda, when I described what happened, said the mechanic was probably in a hurry since that’s how he earns more money, checked one ball joint and figured that in a low mileage well maintained car that the other was also fine so skipped it. . Since Keith apparently put things in the computer wrong, Greg the mechanic may not have realized he checked a ball joint replaced 22,493 miles earlier while the original ball joint went unchecked. That theory makes a lot of sense to me. It makes sense, but it’s also negligent, in my opinion. That error has cost me thousands.
TJ in sales told me he’d knock off $500 from sticker price of a CR-V, from $28,000 to $27,500. ( note: I called other Honda dealers to check price on CR-V and was quoted in $27’s so that isn’t a discount ) TJ also told me he had to knock off $500 of the value of my trade because the car was, you know, broken, and taking off an additional $750 because I have vinyl lettering on the car that will have to be removed. I said that didn’t sound like the dealership was making an effort to make things right. I like my car and had planned to keep it, was only considering a trade because of the damage done due to the service department’s negligence. TJ said sales and service are different, it’s not his fault service screwed up and he had no intention of losing money selling a car just because the service dept’s negligence cost me thousands.. I then went to talk to Glenn/service, and when I came back to the sales floor, TJ chased me down with a print out that was supposed to prove his point that my trade was not worth the kbbb/edmunds/webuyanycar valuations. . 3 valuations of $7900, $8100, $8300 and only TJ’s eval started with a 6. TJ stomped after me waving paper to prove his point and shouting to get the last word and be sure I knew I was wrong, it felt very much like an argument with my teen where she stomps back to her room yelling. I didn’t expect a professional sales guy to behave that way.
In summary, the service dept’s resolution to an unhappy customer was to repair a faulty part at no charge and give me the free oil change I was due for. The sale’s dept idea of making it right was $500 off new car price while reducing by $1250 the value of a car bought there and damaged there. That math winds up with me paying a grand or so above sticker price for the new car.
I don’t feel that South Hills Honda made a fair and reasonable attempt to negotiate a fair settlement to our dispute.
In addition, misogyny runs rampant at this business and I was deeply offended by their attitude towards me, that I must be incompetent since I’m a woman, and also that when my 13 yr old daughter raised her hand and asked permission to speak, she was told her opinion was irrelevant.
Service dept negligence caused $3,000 of damage to my car. i asked dealer to make it right and asked them to work up numbers if I traded it. TJ offered me a CR_V for 27,500, same price other dealers offered in response to a phone call. TJ told me sales and service are separate and he did not intend to take a loss on the sale of a new car because service screwed up my car. He told me he was taking $1250 off the price of my trade because it was, you know, broken. When I said he was wasting my time, he behaved like a petulant teen. He printed something while I was talking to service and followed me out the door waving the paper at me to prove how wrong I was. He had to have the last word and kept saying i was wrong. It was like arguing with my teen. I expected more professional behavior, especially since I’ve been a loyal client for years. I bought the car there from Jason.
Geez, that’s unbelievable. Kudos and such.
Date: March 10, 2012Sales Person: JanetLocations: Everett WAI came in today to buy a car did not know exactly what I waentd. Janet our salesperson was amazing!! She spent time with my girlfriend and I and showed us some great cars and suv’s. Janet was so informative and really showed she cared about us and our needs. When we decided we loved a 2003 Toyota 4 Runner it was a very simple and joyful process to make a deal. We had our new SUV in no time flat. Janet, Robert the Sales Manager, and the entire staff at Best Bet Auto are totally top notch. Best experience I have every had buying a car. They have my business for Life!!!
South Hills Honda is the place to buy a Honda; hands down! There is no reason to look anywhere else. Sounds crazy, but despite being a longtime customer, I searched around (just to be sure), compared prices and still found the absolute best price at South Hills Honda.
I have a 2007 Honda Civic Si and we just replaced our 2004 Honda Odyssey with a new Odyssey. I had the Consumer Reports price report before shopping and, from my calculations, I think South Hills Honda made $37 on our deal….yes, only $37.
Sounds like a commercial, but it isn’t!
I take both of my cars here to be serviced. As always, their service has always and continues to be spectacular, the people are friendly and the prices can’t be matched. I cannot say enough great things about this dealership.
I looked around at a lot of different dealerships after returning my last lease, the place was a nightmare. I was basically scammed into getting the lease. I went into South Hills Honda because it had a good reputation on the internet and my friends only told me good things about this place. I was greeted by Kirk and Garth, they were very friendly and helped me along every step of the way. They fixed up a good monthly payment and I didn’t feel like I was being pressured at all.
Customer service is an essential factor when finding a dealership in my book. I’ve been to a few dealerships within my area and I didn’t really get 100%, except when I walked into South Hills. I was greeted immediately and introduced to a salesman. It was a Saturday, and packed, so right off the bat I was rather impressed. Scott had walked me around the showroom asking questions, getting to know me, just being really personable. No rushing or pushy feeling you might usually get at a busy dealership. I knew what I wanted, so I was flat out with him. Scott took the time to listen to me and was flat out with me as well. He had me meet his finance manager, TJ who was also very honest. They worked together to tailor a deal that worked for me. I was a great feeling to have such great service from busy sales people. There was no skipping steps, if anything, they went the extra step. Looking for a great deal on a Honda, visit Scott at South Hills.
Like many in my family that have always gone to South Hills Honda, I was no different. I went into the dealership and the salesmen already knew my name, having had helped us when my two brothers came in for a new car, when my mom and my dad came in for a new car. I got the same service they’ve always given my family. Honest salesmen, competitive pricing and an answer to every question. I can imagine in 7 years when my kids are driving that they’ll come here for their first cars.
I have always been a Honda person so when the lease was up on my Civic this month there was no doubt that I would return to South Hills Honda. I had been in touch with South Hills regarding my trade-in so I had an appointment to come in and meet with my salesman. I was in with my previous Civic and out with my new one in record time. This is my 3rd Civic from South Hills, I refuse to take my business anywhere else. Whether it’s the showroom or service department, I am always satisfied.
I went to a couple mechanics around the way to see if they could figure out an out-of-the-blue electric issue. After not getting the problem resolved, I finally gave in and went to South Hills Honda, scared that it was going to cause an arm and a leg. I was surprised, the issue had to a little piece in the electrical unit and that they could have it fixed right away. It was easy, it wasn’t expensive at all and my car’s like new. What more could I really ask for?
After having seen the 2012 Civic, I fell in love with it. I walked into South Hills Honda to see if I could get a good deal on it. I had an idea of a number in mind and they negotiated down to it. You better believe I got my civic a day later and I love it even more now that it’s all mine.
I got my used Acura from South Hills Honda. You would NEVER know someone owned it before me because that’s what good condition it’s in. I had my uncle (whose a mechanic) double check it just to make sure, and he confirmed that everything was exactly as Greg told me it was. This dealer is great, and everyone who works there is friendly! I like that it’s near the city but not actually IN it too.
Ron was great in helping me and my husband pick out our Odyssey. We knew basically what we wanted, but he really helped us weigh which options were worth it for us. He treated me as if I was a member of his own family.
If you don’t like wasting your time, saving money and dealing with people that understand you, go to South Hills Honda. I bought my first car there in 2000 and just recently bought my second car there. It is easy, the people are really friendly and I feel like I got the truth out of salesmen, they told pros, cons, miles per gallon, all the nitty gritty and at the end of the day, we came to a decision that was best for me.
Putting in a request for an internet quote made my life so much easier and saved me a ton of time at the dealership. South Hills offered me a better price on the Fit I wanted than either of the other dealers I contacted. CJ was a very nice salesman and helped me choose the best model to meet my needs.
With the holidays and the new year coming up, I decided to splurge and treat myself to something new. I called into South Hills Honda to see they had my candy red accord coupe on the lot and that was it. I went in, did some paperwork for financing and got everything I wanted and just in time for x-mas.
After my car died, my husband suggested we check out South Hills Honda for a new one, since several of his coworkers had gone there and had good experiences. I’m so glad we did! Cody, our salesperson, was awesome! He was genuinely interested in helping us without being aggressive and was very honest about the pros and cons of certain models. I followed his advice and purchased an Accord, which I’m very happy with. The finance department got me really good payments too. Buying the car there was such a nice and easy experience!
I’m a long time customer of South Hills Honda – I’ve been driving Hondas since I was in college, and this is the only place I will buy them. They always have the best prices in the Pittsburgh area, and every staff member I’ve worked with has been kind and helpful. They seem to really care about their customers, which keeps me coming back.
South Hills Honda got me the best possible deal on my new Insight. I know this because I shopped around to numerous dealers before finally buying the car from them. I was very happy with their finance department, and the salesman who helped me was very honest and straightforward. I would go there for my next Honda, for sure.
A reliable used car is not always the easiest to come by, I went to South Hills Honda on recommendation from a close friend. The salesmen were very helpful knowledgeable. I will recommend this dealership to anyone in search of a used Honda.
I LOVE my new CR-V and it’s all thanks to South Hills Honda. I told them what I was looking for, a car that’s good on gas, sporty, all without tearing a hole in my pocket. From beginning to the end, the experience was pleasant. left with my CR-V the same day! THANK you South Hills Honda.
