I took my son to this Withnell Hyundai dealership in salem, Oregon on a Saturday to look at a car. After about an hour of the salesman showing us stuff that I had already said was above our price range, they showed us a smaller car that had 14,000 miles on it and a good warranty left. My 21 year old son drove it and fell in love. He was buying my 1973 VW from me that I had just spent 3,000 dollars on to start restoring it, and still owed me 1700.00
Part of the deal to get it financed was an agreement to payoff the 1700.00 my son owed me. We took delivery on the car, with a promise that they would have him financed by Wednesday. Sunday I took the VW into them, I had to tow it because the alternator quit (which I had told them about). I dropped off the VW and gave them the title.
My son took the car a few miles out of town for two day to see his cousin. When he got back on Tuesday, he called me and told me of some things about the car that bothered him. We knew when we got the car that it had some paint damage on one side, but when i got to looking closely at it, it was obvious that the car had been in some kind of accident. I had asked the salesman about it and he said the car had never been in an accident at all. I even found damage that went around to the other side through the bumper, that we hadn’t seen before because the car was so covered with dust. I now know they left the dust there on purpose to hide the damage.
Later that day I finally got a chance to drive the car. I was a very unhappy customer. At an idle the car was running very rough, and made the whole car shake. When I got up to around 55 mph, or certain rpm’s, it had dead spots in the acceleration. We took the car back to them the next day.
As soon as I walked in I was greeted by three people. the salesman, the accounts manager, and a big guy who threatened me when I said we were going to rescind the deal. It was the most horrible experience of my entire 49 years. I have never been treated so badly by any car company. I had to threaten to call the sheriffs out to even get my car back that I traded in. There was as of yet no contract on the car.
They finally did get me my car, and had to tow it up to where we were. When I tried to start it, no go. It was a brand new engine that had never had any problems, and worked perfectly when I dropped it off. When I finally got it started, it blew oil everywhere, out of every conceivable place you can think of. On closer inspection I found a can of starting fluid, the ether kind, that they had used to try and get it started. They obviously didn’t know how to start a VW. It’s so easy to start if you don’t flood them. You absolutely CANNOT use either on a VW. It will blow the heads on them. When I braced them about it they called me names and told me to take the piece of blankity blank and leave.
I towed the car home, with some still missing parts that they refused to give me. I had been told before NOT to deal with Withnell, and now I wish I had listened. I plan to sue them for damages to the VW, and have already contacted a team at Withnell to start proceedings.
