My wife and I worked out a verbal deal for a Chevy Traverse LT with Steve Palmeri Sr for a 3 year lease. We did not haggle or try to work out any sort of deal with Steve, we told him what trim and color we liked, and he gave us a monthly quote and worked up the preliminary offer paperwork. We told Steve that we would be turning in our current car to Mazda in a few days and give us some time to think about it. We ended up test driving a couple other model cars over the last couple of days and ultimately decided we wanted to go with the Traverse. We called Steve up and he was excited to close the deal… He let us test drive the car again to make sure we were happy and sat down to do the paperwork. Steve pulled out the preliminary offer paperwork that he did a few days ago with our quote and review the numbers with us and said that he just had to have his finance manager look over the terms and we should be good to go. 5 minutes later Steve came back and told us that there was a mistake made with the quote, and that the finance manager who originally did the offer for us was on vacation… and that we aren’t going to want the finance manager who was there to come out and talk to us because “it’s just a bad situation”… This statement was then followed with the “correct” number which was $40 more a month than the original quote he gave us – at this point I want to remind everyone that my wife and I did not haggle with Steve at all – the original quote for the Traverse was $459 a month and he’s now saying it’s $499 a month. This whole experience is absolutely embarrassing for the dealership and Steve. They wasted our time, and made us feel like idiots. The original offer Steve gave us wasn’t unrealistic, it appeared to be competitive as we had similar negotiated terms with other dealers for other branded cars in the same class… plus we had the GM employee discount from a family member which is supposedly worth a lot. This was a very unprofessional negotiation tactic – “we will give you an amazing quote that will get you back in the door, and then tell you the real price and try to convince you that it was a mistake made by our finance manager who is conveniently on vacation”. I will never recommend David Chevrolet to any friends or families, and will share our experience when and where we can. This is why people don’t trust car dealers and hate the car buying process. Instead, we will move on from Chevy and find a different car/dealer that is honest with their customers.
