My comment does not relate to the sales experience at Hoffman Honda. I am writing about the closing procedure when we paid for the car. We were told that it was ‘State Law’ that all cars must have their VIN etched on the window. The charge would be $159. I questioned him (Brendan) on it and he pointed to a poster from the State of Ct. I said I had never heard of this but he said it was the law. Not wanting to make a big scene, we paid it and left with our new car. When we got home I checked on the mythical state law and guess what, there was no law which said that customers were required to pay for ‘vin etching’. I emailed him and expressed my disappointment with the charge. He said he would refund the charge if I wanted. I emailed back and said I wanted a refund. That was 60 days ago. Obviously I am not getting my refunf and I am writing only to warn consumers of this game. Be firm! Vin etching is not mandatory and Hoffman is just ripping people off for an additional $159.
This is one of the worst car shopping experiences ever. I went into the dealership the first time to purchase a Honda Pilot. They wouldn’t run my credit and tell me what interest rate they would offer me without writing up a deal. So we negotiated on the price and they still wouldn’t tell me what the interest rate would be. In the end the sales person assured me that no one could beat their price and he was so confident he told me to see if I could find a better deal out there…I did at the dealership in Hartford.
A few months later my husband wanted a new car and I initially liked the salesman at Hoffman so I went back. I knew exactly what I wanted and all he had to do was locate the car. He did and had me come up to the dealership to sign papers, or so I thought. Basically I dragged my family up and wasted a whole evening only to be told we weren’t closing the deal that night and that I had to come back. Also, he only offered me $200 on a trade and refused to do any better. Agitated at this treatment, I contacted another dealership, they had the car in stock ready to go, we went in signed the papers and were out the door in a matter of hours. They gave me $1000 on the same trade. Anyhow, the Hoffman guy calls me back, harrasses me about buying the car – I said not interested – he gets his manager on the phone and miraculously they are now willing to give me $2000 on the trade. I said “no deal” and they both basically made rude comments and I hung up. Go anywhere but Hoffman if you want honest, fair treatement.
