This has been a frustrating experience. They were unable to deliver on promises made which required my 8 month pregnant wife (who works and takes care of our toddler) to make multiple trips to the dealership because they didn’t do what they had stated.
We bought a used car from the dealership (Honda Odyssey). The vehicle was overall in okay shape with some scratches outside. The problem was the inside had claw marks going through the door linings from the previous owner’s dog. We negotiated to have them fixed by the dealer and agreed to buy the vehicle. We made an agreement for my wife to bring back the vehicle to have it detailed, some touch up paint, and to have the front driver and passenger doors repaired from the claw marks. We were told it would take around 20-30 minutes to detail and do the minor repairs.
My pregnant wife and our year and half old went back on the specified day after leaving a message and not having anyone return her call. She waited around around 3 hrs before being told that they could not complete everything. Manager Curtis Simmons then said that he had misunderstood what kind of interior the vehicle had and that contrary to what was discussed in the sales negotiations, he could not patch it up and the interior door panels would have to be replaced. He said the shop could cover some of it but we would have to pay another $150. My wife said that was unacceptable and that I wouldn’t agree to it either. At this point she said Simmons gave her a “there there little wifey” type look and told her again to talk it over with her husband and see what I wanted to do. She was told to come back on yet another day (3rd trip after buying the vehicle). Hearing that my wife somehow wasn’t capable of making a decision was pretty frustrating to me. My wife is very smart and hard working. I think she was unfairly judged as being incapable of making a decision on her own without her husband there because she is pregnant and was taking care of another child while at the store.
I called and left a message for Mr. Simmons explaining that the situation was ridiculous and they could either readjust the cost of the vehicle, or fix it, but I wasn’t going to pay for repairs which were supposed to be done earlier. I also let him know that I didn’t appreciate the dealership trying to yank my wife around like she didn’t have anything better to do than it for hours in a car dealership trying to keep a toddler reasonably happy. Simmons responded that he talked to service and they would take care of it.
My wife makes her 3rd trip to the dealership and drops off the van. She picks it up a couple days later (4th trip) and drives off only to look to the passenger side and see that they didn’t repair the claw marks on the passenger side. Now we simply don’t have time to go back again and deal with a dealership in too big of a hurry to take care of details or be concerned with providing customer service. Simmons is clearly too busy because he agreed to fix it, leading us to purchase the vehicle, before he looked inside at the interior and that he wasn’t able to make sure the vehicle had been properly fixed before telling us it was ready to be picked up. The finance department was also very pushy about their in-home extended warranty.
It is a bit sad because we purchased our vehicle on our second visit because Patrick, our salesperson, was so friendly with us and was not at all pushy. He seems like a genuinely nice person and I’d be happy to have him show me vehicles again, but I don’t think I’d bother dealing with Gwinnett Place Honda again. There are lots of dealerships that can immediately take care of issues and respect their customer’s time.
I got the certificates from Truecar for a new odyssey. After several emails to the sales person to provide me the actual drive out price for the van based on the truecar pricing, I never received any communications from the sales person. The only fresh email every time will be when I will come to the dealership to buy the van.
I decided to walk in to buy the odyssey as quoted in Truecar but the people in Gwinnett place Honda added several accessories to the van (which I totally do not need in the van) and pressured to buy the van.
The sales man who showed me the van later took me to the other sales man (Robert Dittrich was not in the office when I walked in) in the internet department and he was boring me for a while with all of his sales tactics. He even told me will reduce price on some accessories and he bumped the price on other accessories without looking into the actually product and labor cost of the accessory in question. As they did not want to sell me the van without the accessories they told me that none of the odyssey’s in their dealership comes without accessories. As I was firm in the price as quoted in Truecar the internet sales person who I was talking at the dealership all of a sudden stood up showed his back and said their’s nothing to talk to you anymore and walked away.
I was left alone in the dealership without any courtesy good bye from none of the sales person or people in their dealership. They had no decency or courtesy to greet me and end a sales conversation.
I really doubt how Honda is awarding this dealership as the best in Atlanta. Very disappointed for a dealership I was thinking was the best one in Atlanta GA. Because of this dealership I was even thinking if I should buy a Honda.
Gwinnett place Honda is registered with Truecar but I really doubt they respect the certificates from Truecar.
Hope this helps people who plan to buy from this dealership.
I did not finance from the dealership but I still rated lowest as the finance person in the dealership should be no different.
This was the worst time I ever had at a dealership, I was told if you do not buy it someone else will. Okay, what type of customer service is that. Plus, I was told one thing when I walked in GPH and then was told another buy the sales manager. I would not recommend this dealership to a friend. I hope the CEO of Honda knows how their customer’s are treated.
Do not buy a used car from this place. Despite what they say, do not believe that a thorough check has been done on the vehicle prior to being put on display for sale. Get a 2nd, outside, opinion. Not doing so will cost you in the long-run when issues not seen by the human eye erupt within a reasonable 30-days of purchase. Luckily, I was able to detect the terribly frayed seatbelt (a major safety issue), but I didn’t readily detect the door handle, which was wasn’t securely attached. Within 30 days, that door handle literally fell off. The $4500 extended “super” warranty that I purchased did not cover the repair because the door handle, while integral to safely entering, exiting, and protecting the vehicle and my family, was considered a “trim” item, which is not covered.
Nothing against the sales person. He was extremely nice and empathetic (hence the 5-rating for “friendliness,” but ultimately, his hands were tied by managers who continue to give the phrase “used car salesman” a bad name. As a matter of fact, the manager even hinted that I could have loosened damaged the handle. In the 20 years that I have been buying cars, I’ve never seen a handle come off a car. Give me a break!
I just paid the money. I did, however, get a minimal 50 dollar discount after having to sit through dumb “metaphors” about “brother’s houses” (Kendrick Chevrolet). Thanks, JR for that.
In short, go elsewhere. While I see that this dealer has pretty good overall reviews, do you really want to take the chance that you’ll fall in the unlucky category that I have fallen in?!!! Especially when making a $30,000 purchase?!!! My money is hard-earned and I’d rather not gamble with it. If this review makes one person thinks twice and go elsewhere, then the time I spent to warn the public is well worth it.
I feel so strongly about this, that I will find other ways to post my opinion outside of this site.
Caveat Emptor. I hope they spend the money I wasted well.
Excellent dealership, excellent sales team. Ask for Robert Dittrich or Kristian Gjessing. They treated me with respect, had the best price, no games, and answered all questions honestly.
I have to say that if you are in the market for a Honda, not only should you take a serious look at Gwinnett Place Honda, but that you should DEMAND to work with Tim Kettler! He was hands down the best person I have ever dealt with in all my years of car buying. I almost didn’t even consider Gwinnett place because of an experience that my brother had there years ago and the fact that some of the other quotes I had from dealers closer to me were better than Gwinnett Place Honda’s by a few hundred bucks! Well one dealer near Mall of GA flat out LIED to me to get me to drive out there… they didn’t even have the Accord V6 in the color that I was looking for, and even then the silver one they did have was somehow higher priced?! After that I took time off of my busy schedule to go pick one up from the other dealer that had given me a lower quote. I know all the fine print on quotes say accessories are optional and it seems that every dealer adds something, but the other dealer and I agreed on a price (higher than their first quote, yes they “bumped” me too but I wanted the car)and after EVERYTHING was agreed to and written down, when they put me into the “finance office” (even though I was paying cash) this other dealer changed my price by another $200! At this point I was pissed off so I left without buying.
After all the BS with these other dealers I went back online to do more research. I found a couple of dealers with the Accord I was looking for but I also started looking at dealership reviews at which point I found this site. After reading all the reviews I see that yes Gwinnett Place Honda has some real ugly reviews from awhile back which can be expected from any large business, but what really shocked me was the several more recent posts that not only were all great, but all mentioned Tim Kettler as the reason for the great service.
So with all this new info I contacted gwinnett place honda and asked for Tim Kettler. He was very pleasant to talk to. I didn’t tell him anything about the other dealers I’d been to or about seeing his reviews, I wanted to test him out.
This is where he truly shocked me. I told him what quotes I had and I wanted him to beat them to which he replied he wasn’t going to play any games with me. Say what??? He explained that most dealer’s definition of a “drive out” price was whatever they wanted to say to get me to “drive out” to see them. I would have argued this with him had I not already experienced this firsthand where I was supposedly told all costs just to have things pop up when I got there or that something was “just sold”.
He was very nice and upfront even though I was very “abrasive” to say the least since at this point I was tired and frustrated of my past 2 tries to buy the Accord I wanted.
So I set an appointment to meet with Tim Kettler the next day since he was very pleasant plus he said he had the Accord I was looking for. I got a little concerned during my drive there that I might have the same problem that the car was “just sold yesterday” so I called Tim on his cell phone and told him my concerns to which he surprised me AGAIN by saying that not only was the car still there, but that he had the key in his pocket for our appointment within 20 minutes and that he had hidden the car out back. He asked me how far away I was for our appointment that was in 20 minutes to which I was about 15-20 minutes away. I thought this was a setup as to it being “just sold” or “hidden”… but when I arrived there the place was HUGE and Tim had just brought the car up front and parked it as I was pulling in. Now hows that for service!
Ok so now I’m already extremely impressed with the surprise concierge treatment I’m getting I’m starting to see exactly what it is that Tim does to get the types of posts he has from happy customers. Ok, great, first impression was very impressive, let’s see what happens with the rest of the process and the pricing. Tim was in no way shape or form like your traditional car salesman. Tim Kettler was not pushy at all and he was very nice and pleasant even though I was kinda being abrasive because I expected just some surprise or something to come up after my past 2 experiences in the last few days trying to buy this Accord. I was still very abrasive because I thought if I let my guard down that I’d be open to getting taken for a ride yet again. I was just plain shocked when we got to the pricing and it was exactly as he said it would be including all the fine print. I did lie to Tim a couple times and told him I might go look at the places I’d already been to see if Tim could get me a better price. Tim’s price was actually the best out of all the dealer’s when you got to the bottom line, plus he never had to lie to me or play games like all the other dealers did to me.
So not only did Gwinnett Place Honda have what I wanted, Tim Kettler got it for me at the best price AND gave me the best car buying experience EVER! I was in and out with my new Accord in just over an HOUR! He did exactly what he said he would do from the beginning and KEPT HIS WORD!
Thanks again Tim for everything! I will make sure to tell everybody I know about our transaction. I feel sorry that I took my frustrations from my past experiences out on you and that I lied to you so I hope this post makes up for that. I’ll also make sure to post this elsewhere for you just because of that.
It’s not always where you go, it’s who you work with. Gwinnett place not only had the biggest selection I’ve ever seen, they also had the best person to work with.
If you want the best of both, go to gwinnett place honda and ask for Tim Kettler to help you out.
And Tim, if you’re ever tired of selling cars I’ll hire you in a heartbeat.
B.C.
I spoke to Tim a ahile ago on the phone and I have to say he was one of the most helpful people I have ever come across when trying to sell me a car
Our family loves traveling a lot so we went for the 2007 Honda Element from this dealership with a good deal, and we were pleased with its performance. It has got enough space to carry our stuffs. Traveling in the vehicle is very smooth and comfortable. I would like to recommend both the vehicle and the dealership to everyone.
Better value, longer warranty and a good price is exactly what I find in those certified cars by Gwinnett Place Honda in Duluth. Ever since I visited this amazing dealership, I feel I will never regret in life about my decision.
I had never thought that selling my old car could be so difficult. I was relieved to find the online vehicle appraisal process by Gwinnett Place Honda at Duluth which was not only easy but also quick. I got a very good trade value for my car and I recommend this dealer strongly.
The regular offers here seemed like they were for some special occasion. It was a special occasion for me, but the dealer seemed to have a lot of offers, almost as if he knew the occasion! I walked back completely satisfied that I had made a great pick, just the right kind of gift. In the unusual event of my getting into trouble, I can always catch up with the dealership on their online live chat!
