Total douchebag. Avoid this business! Read reviews, and lawsuits against him.
I have purchased 2 cars from Dave, both cars were high mile used cars. Both were at what I felt was a good price. Dave does a lot of his own work, both on body and minor repairs. The Acura I purchased had almost 150K miles…he had repainted a fender. Looked great to me, but I was buying a used 150K mile car. Never had a issue with the car, and actually sold it a few months later and made several hundred . I didn’t like filling up with Premium gas.. Now that I have read some of these reviews, I see it must have been Dave’s fault…could never be mine….oops but does that mean I should give Dave the money I made when I sold it. No wait…I can act like a diverse person…and they only view life from one side, so it would be OK to keep the money.
I guess I look at a cheap used car different then many. I had a chance to check the car out, Dave even offered to let me take it to my mechanic. Which I did not do. If your a big enough to sign your name on the purchase order, you should be comfortable with the car before you do. If not don’t sign…PERIOD.
But it is always easier to blame the dealer…as far as I can see all Daves cars are older with high miles…and while the car could run great one minute, a day later something could break. Just the gamble you take when buying this type car, and not Dave’s fault.
And like one reviewer said, if you don’t like that risk, go buy yourself a new car with warranty.
My opinion, Dave does the best he can do, working with older high mile cars..if he knows something is wrong with it, he will tell you, or not sell it to you. I don’t think you can ask for any more then that.
didnt buy a car from him, but did look at a few he had listed. great guy. seems honest. I dont get why so many people are whining about their problems. Look, this guy’s a dealer. he doesnt keep his car for years. His job is to buy, clean, inspect, and sell. The used car dealer cant repair every single issue, or else they will go out of business. His job is to flip cars. dont want problems, buy new. dont buy used. stupid whining pussies.
George,
You are a big talker.. and yet you didn’t buy a car through him. He is always nice in the beginning and promises that a mechanic has checked the car out. His mechanic uses bubblegum and Duct tape to fix issues. Go buy a car there. Please, I beg of you, but don’t cry when you realize this “nice guy” just ripped you off.. Now go ahead and tell me to fuck off, I am the retard that bought the car there.. heard it all before. You are right though, I should have bought a new car, to bad we can’t all be a “Rich Bitch” like you.
Purchased a car for my daughter. Promised by Dave that certain things would be fixed (electric door locks, squeeky belt, EGR valve and get me a key fob for the car). I had to take the car back to him twice to fix the locks properly and the EGR valve and they still don’t work right. He gave me a key fob he said would work and it is the wrong one for that style car.
Here’s the BIG thing…He returned the car to me the second time at night(from “fixing” the problems) I realized the next day he had taken one of the front tires off (both were matching and nearly new when I bought it)and replaced it with an old much more worn tire that did not match and it was only on with TWO lugnuts and he had changed out the spare tire in the trunk with an old used one. The one I saw in the car was brand new and had never been used. I HAD ALREADY PURCHASED THE CAR when he took parts off of it and replaced them with inferior and even dangerous parts. The second day my daughter drove the car, the tire he changed out went flat and left her stranded on the side of the road. I have tried calling him now and he won’t return any calls. That’s a guilty conscious.
Dave is a scam. He makes promises he doesn’t keep, takes short cuts, covers up and maskes flaws in the vehicle, and took parts off my car AFTER I bought it. That’s called stealing! Please, for your own safety do not do business with him or this company!
After searching for a car for my daugher for a few weeks from “private parties” it was an absolute pleasure to find Sandy River Auto. Nice clean cars, carfax right in the seats, clean facility. Of course your always taking a risk with a used car that has 100K + miles on it (just like one from a private party)and atleast its nice to know my money is going to someone LOCAL that is just trying to make a living. I will definitely use them again in the future!
This place is a scam shop!! Hides problems with Stop Leak, you will be lucky to make it home. Do yourself a favor and buy from a private party….there is NO mechanic at this shop, Daves a liar.
Dang people do you realize he sells USED cars not only are they used they are older and for what the cars are worth, You have to expect problems either later or sooner on down the road or a freak accident happens and the car break down 30 minutes after you buy it. His mechanic fixes what they can and the obvious problems but there not going to sit there and rebuild motors on USED cars that aren’t worth allot in the first place so they wouldn’t be In business if they did that to every single car. Buying used cars anywhere are a gamble and a 50/50 chance that your either going to get a good USED car or your gonna get someone else’s headache that’s the chance you take when you buy a USED car. If you guys are going to sit here and b*tch about him cause your car broke down no matter when it did, You broke Ass’s should of saved a little more money and bought a NEW car with a WARRENTY. I’m not Dave’s buddie and have never met the guy but you people who are complaining and ragging on Dave for you wanting to buy a USED car are a bunch of idiots. Now for the people crying about his mechanic isent certified hahaha!! I’m not certified either but does that mean I’m a crappy mechanic? Nope! But I can guarentee you that I’m better than 95% of “certified” mechanics out there. Yes I understand he runs a business so he probably should have a “certified” mechanic to give his customers a little more comfort when buying a car from him or working on there cars and for people like you guys who cry about USED cars breaking down so soon LOL that’s why there called USED cars, people! Not to mention he’s private owned company your buying from so he’s not going to guarentee anything or WARRENTY such cheap USED cars. So next car you people buy make sure it’s a NEW car or one of those overpriced stealership that meets all your USED dealership standards. Just my .2 cents on a bunch of people that have no commen sense. Don’t bad talk him cause he sells USED cars for a living but kick yourselves in the a** for taking the broke path in life and not having enough money or good enough credit to buy a NEW car. Have a Good day everyone!
Do you realize you don’t know how to spell? Anyways… awesome that “Daves” friend could come on here and write a review to help his crappy rating. The point is, he sells crap for cars and he knows it…he is not a honest person what so ever, rigs cars to run long enough to take peoples money. Doesn’t matter if USED or not. Who wants to buy a new car for their teenager?!! Go out of business Dave, no one wants to buy your junk and be happy with it.
I’m not Dave’s friend first off and Broke worthless parents buy USED cars for there kids first car, aren’t parents suppose to want the best for there kids? So we all know how highly you think of your kids lol they mean a USED car lol! There USED cars for a reason cause there all JUNK so slap yourself in the face for buying JUNK aka USED and quit being a little cry baby cause you can’t afford NEW and frustrated cause your kid means a USED car to you. Life sucks when you always buy JUNK aka USED someone else’s Crap. Have a good day and man up and quit crying like a baby or else someone needs to pull your man card and give you a B*tch card
Your intelligence goes along with your spelling. You obviously don’t have children, so please keep it that way. Dave is a scam artist, plain and simple. You don’t say your mechanic has inspected all cars when he hasn’t, don’t call someone a mechanic when he’s not. You don’t make promises and don’t keep them, that is not a good business. You don’t throw stop leak into parts of a car to hide problems so the car only runs a few days. It is a scam shop..plain and simple. He should change his business name to “Junk Cars”, then I would call him a honest business man. Thanks for writing a review for your friend Dave but this place sucks no matter how fluffy you try to make it sound.
WARNING!!! I purchased a car from dave and now we are stuck with over 2 grand in repairs. HE IS ONLY A DETAILER! He buys cars from auction and cleans them up to look nice but no work is done on the engine at all. If you consider buying a car from him, take it to a mechanic… he can not be trusted….
Will give more detail later, but bought a car from Dave, promised it was checked and cleared by his mechanic in good mecahnical condition and now I am looking at spending close to $3k in needed repairs. Car cost $3k.
Called Dave following day, he told me to sue him and hung up.
Dave said the cars were all checked out by mechanics-not true-I bought a car there and it started knocking the next day-Dave said he would split the cost of a “rebuild” from Ariana auto down the street-a month and a half later I drove away with a leaky junkyard motor which also started knocking after the first oil change. He must have dumped some Lucas in the crankcase or something. The idiot that rebuilt the motor put to long of a bolt through the cam-cap which poked a hole through the head and caused a huge leak- Dave was nice enough(I guess) to buy the heap back from me at $2000 loss. Most dealers probably wouldn’t do that. I would say that at the lower price range you should probably avoid dealers altogether and just buy from private sellers. Dealers buy cheap fix or hide problems and tell you anything to get you to buy a crappy car.
Would you be willing you contact us with your story and information?
I was treated very well, Dave is a knowledgeable guy and easy to work with. I told Dave what I was interested in and could afford, and he made it happen! As I read a few of the reviews, I think as a buyer you need to keep in mind these are Used cars and compared to some of the other places I have looked at, Daves are Very clean!
I would buy again!
Mitch
Worst car I’ve ever purchased- polished turd

Went and looked at a Honda, Dave was great and answered all my questions. Now just need to make up my mind!!
I would refer my friends there.
Just bought a 94 integra with 142k on it and it runs like new! Dave has all the carfax reports sitting on the passenger seats of the car ready to go! Its an older car so I am expecting to have to repair little things, but it’s reliable, clean, and drives great. Dave is a great guy! Very happy! If you’re unsure about buying a used car, have it checked out before hand, so quit bitching!!!
This guy is a scam artist. So quit pretending you bought a car from this guy when you didn’t. Great job getting a friend to review your business 😉
Walked in and salesman/owner was smoking marijuana at his place of business. WOW!! Found quick fix cheap jobs done to the cars including smokeless oil and fake timing belt stickers and while there seen them rolling back miles on odometers. Do not buy from these people. Not trustworthy and will tell u anything to buy a car. His employees will not even reccomend any of this dave smiths cars. He is a liar and seen it first hand.
I read your review after visiting dealership.I seriously doubt what you are stating.Dave runs a nice business.nice clean quality cars.the carfax was in every car.I felt nothing as you are stating! You should pick on a bigger dealership.Rather than someone who appears to be running a nice business
You sound like some disgruntled employee to me or someone with a grudge against the business owner. He sold me a 2003 silver beetle for my wife. We still have the car and couldn’t be happier. We were on a budget and he helped us out and worked with us on the price. I have nothing bad to say about him. Fair and straight up guy. Clean office, clean cars, respectable place.
We had just purchased our third vehicle from Dave @ sandy river. The first two were for our daughters. This one we just purchased last week was for us. Dave is great and eager to help! We would definitely recommend them. And we will be back to get our youngest a car in the spring.
Bought a 2002 Honda Accord. Car was so far out of alignment tires were gone on the inside. Dave said that he had been driving this car for over two months, and that it didn’t burn a drop of oil.. Lies. Goes through 1qt. per week. Timing belt was shot, overall worst car I have ever owned. Hey but at least it was detailed when I got. Don’t go here. They Lie.
Would you be willing to exchange contact information? We were also taken advantage of & something has to be done.
I just recently bought a car from dave at sandy river auto, i believe he is the owner. He was very helpful over the phone about questions I had and even meet me on Sunday at his shop so i could test drive the car. The car is for my son who is heading back to college in California in a couple weeks and I wanted him to have a reliable car. I felt that I was not hassled to buy or felt any pressure if anything he left me to talk to my husband. After deciding to purchase Dave offered for us to wait in waiting area while he took car through dmv and deq for us….Now I feel comfortable in the car we chose for my son and will be back to Sandy River again…Thank u…Shirley Nelson
Good luck! Cross your fingers that he makes it to California
bought a car from dave .went in the car was as described.a 1996 honda accord .
the car was very clean and ran very well.thank you!!!!
.
Worst experience with buying a car. Didn’t even make it home. Can’t find much on this dealer, must change names yearly to keep hidden. Dave said he has been doing this since the 90’s, obviously a con-artist. If you have to keep changing your business name then maybe just give it up or actually repair your cars correctly so you can be known as a reliable dealer.
This dealership has never changed it’s name check records before spouting off!!!
Beware of this dealer!! He has mechanics that aren’t certified and that don’t know how to fix actual issues, just band aid them. I bought a car from this dealer and it broke down on my way home. Dave said he would fix it, that he PROMISED to fix it. Got it back and broke down again with the same problem and he took it back again. He had the car for over 2 weeks and I finally got it back and it broke down again with the same problem. Took it to my mechanic and 1500 dollars later my car is up and running. This guy is a fake and a fraud, tries to seem like a reasonable guy but he lies and lies. His cars are crap, read the other reviews. He does not do the repairs needed like he states, he just wears you down until you have had enough.
Like many people on here are questioning, yes, Sandy River Auto is a lemon dealer. They simply buy cars from a dealer’s auction and “repair” them to sell. The problem is they do not employ certified mechanics nor do they have the tools to properly diagnose vehicles, especially European models.
I purchased a 2002 Passat from them and it broke down on the way home. I called the next morning and they promised to repair that Friday. Getting the vehicle to them was extremely inconvenient due to how small their opeartion is. They can’t give you a ride that’s too far from their shop. So after a whole day in the shop of repairing what they were sure was wrong with the vehicle, it broke down again twenty minutes after the shop, even though I told Greg it was still vibrating, to which he replied it was normal.
That night I had to pay to have the car towed to Dick Hannah. After inspecting it, Dick Hannah found that there was ridiculous amount of engine sludge. It was $1,100 just to fix. Keep in mind the car itself was only $4,500.
Whether they’re purposely selling lemons remains to be seen, but they do not have the tools to properly and honestly run a used car business, nor back up this claim on all of their Craigslist ads…
“I OWN A LOCAL DETAIL SHOP, I HAVE BEEN DETAILING AND WORKING ON OTHER DEALERS’ CARS FOR YEARS. I’M TIRED OF THEM SKIMPING ON REPAIRS NOT CARING ABOUT THE CARS OR THEIR CUSTOMERS FOR THAT MATTER, ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MAKING A QUICK BUCK. SO I DECIDED TO GET A DEALERS LICENSE OF MY OWN, AND DO THINGS A LITTLE DIFFERENT TREAT THE CONSUMER THE WAY YOU SHOULD !!!! WITH RESPECT!!!! COME SEE HER, SHE’S IN MY DETAIL SHOP. PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO CALL IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. 503-886-9744. THANKS, GREG.”
If you see a car they’re selling, and think it sounds like a good deal, RUN. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
Uh oh. Now I’m worried. I wish I would have found this website before yesterday. We bought a 1999 Passat from Dave at Sandy River Auto. He claimed it was his friends car who is an engineer and took really good care of it. However, last night it started shuttering while sitting at a stop. Today, I had to try three times to get it started. I’m guessing sludge or carbon build up in the throttle. Those are the most common issues with the 1.8T engines.
Luckily, I have a REALLY good VW mechanic that I’ve taken all my vw’s to over the past 20 years. I’ll take it to him for a check up tomorrow and let you all know what the result is.
As of now though, DON’T BUY ANYTHING from this dealer.
Sold us a defective car with several thousand dollars in mechanical problems and now we have to spend almost 3K more out of our pockets to repair it, we notified them within 24 hrs about the defect and took it back to them within the 72 hrs, they kept it for almost 2 weeks and claimed they fixed it, it broke down on the way home again and we called and they told my wife they put enough money into it and hung up on us. The car is still in the shop.
We had an extremely BAD experience buying a vehicle. We bought a 2001 beetle and had to spend thousands in repairs before we even went through a tank of gas.
Unfortunately your ad claims – “I OWN A LOCAL DETAIL SHOP, I HAVE BEEN DETAILING AND WORKING ON OTHER DEALERS’ CARS FOR YEARS. I’M TIRED OF THEM SKIMPING ON REPAIRS NOT CARING ABOUT THE CARS OR THEIR CUSTOMERS FOR THAT MATTER, ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MAKING A QUICK BUCK. You might be a great detail shop but no matter how much lipstick you put on a pig, its still a pig Greg!
Anyone else buy a clean looking car from this guy and then had to turn around and soak another couple thousand dollars into it because of all the problems the “wonderful detail” covered up?? Please email me, Im curious how many bad cars come out of that shop!!
Im not talking cosmetic crap either, we’re talking serious mechanical issues that were not disclosed or obvious when we purchased the car…….we haven’t even put a hundred miles on it and had to drive it straight to a dealer for repairs, we have spent 1200.00 so far and were told by their certified mechanic that it will now take 3000 to complete the repair on a car we bought from you.
Our car is sitting out in our yard, We had Herzog Meir look at it and they diagnosed, noise coming from engine compartment was a bad timing belt/tension pulley – bad shifting due to transmission has bad Torque converter, ABS system not hooked up, Check engine light is on, cat converter faulty, found wrong dip stick was in the car caused the faulty cat converter, air bag light is on because it has bad seat belt modular, multiple vacuum line issues and some modular condenser unit was broke and needed replaced?……..cost to repair if we want to drive the car and have ABS brakes and air bags in case we cant stop!!!! we just bought it and have not even gone through a tank of gas!!!…………over 3000.00
Cheers!! I can only hope this ad will affect your pockets the way your sale affected mine.
John
Not an honest dealer, bought a toyota 4 runner from then, had a bad vibration, could tell it had A BAD WHINE from the torque converter, they had the torque converter replaced at a nearby shop. found out from that shop that they had been told to only replace the torque converter when in fact the flywheel was so damaged that it needed to be repalced as well, the mechanic said that he was told to ignore the problem (flywheel) put the new torque converter in which was a cheapy and give the vehicle back to the buyer. the transmission failed a very short time later to the tune of $1800 repair. they were not honest about what their repair shop had told them, if they would have been honest i would have paid for the flywheel to be replaced at the same time they replaced the torque converter.
Like Bethany, I bought a car from them and within a month it had extremely costly repairs needed. Since this has happened twice, I am curious if only people with bad experiences write reviews or if it’s common at this dealership. All I know is, I’m removing myself from this experiment and won’t buy there again.
The guys were nice enough, didn’t pressure, and the price was average – but considering that in the end I spent another $2k on getting the car fixed, I could have bought a much nicer car for that price. OK, so it was overpriced.
I’m not super angry, just dissappointed. I wanted to love my car and not feel scared everytime it makes a noise. And I like trusting people – it sucks when I feel that security compromised.
I just bought a 2001 Beetle from them and didnt even make it home before it started making loud noises in the engine, we took it to Herzog Meir and they found soooo many things mechanically wrong with the motor and transmission that it was going to cost us thousands in repairs.Greg at Sandy Rive Auto and his Partner Dave told us “hey its a used car” and you bought it “as is”, we took it back to them, they kept it for 2 weeks and claimed they fixed the problem (we looked into who did the work and they were not certified mechanics) when we picked it back up, it wouldnt shift into drive on the way home and the check engine light came on on the way home so back to Herzog Meir and again, nothing but problems, its now having the torque converter and other rebuilds being done to the transmission, ABS system was not engaged (disconnected) Air Bag light was on and needs new parts to repair, Cat converter throwing bad signals and needs replaced, O2 sensor bad….We’ve owned the car on paper for over a month, during that time, Sandy River Auto had it for 2 weeks, Herzog had it for 3 days the 1st time, 3 days the second time and its currently at AAMCO having the transmission rebuilt.Attorney General is our next step
Funny thing is, I recall when we were in there dropping off the car the 1st time so his trunk monkey could look at it, there was another couple that came in there asking about their car and would it would done being repaired and I never gave any thought……….hes running a detail shop, dealership and repair shop….Perfect,I guess all that detailing makes even the worst running cars look great.you can put lipstick on a pig………..but its still a pig
Awesome car buying experience. Very honest kind people and the car is amazing. We looked all over town and they really had the best price with the lowest miles. I was impressed and would recommend them to anyone who wants to not buy from a sleazy car lot. These guys are first class!
the car ended up in the shop a week and a half later and it was $4480 in repairs so this $5500 car has become a $10,000 car grrrrr not sure that this dealer knew the problems they only had the car 2 days. Now it is too late to take it back. Check engine light was disabled again could have been done prior to them having the car but I have no idea. Very frustrated.
Car back in the shop for Transmission and Throttle Repair! Furiouis with this lot Never buy a car from Sandy River Auto. When I told them I was getting an attourney and going to picket in front of their lot they said bring a cold glass of water! I have contacted Better business bureau and an attourney and they Attourney generals office along with DMV investigations. They ripped me off a single mom of a child with Autism. I am over 12000 into this 01 beetle with 98000 miles on it. If you are smart u will never bu:mad:y from them!
Would you be willing to exchange contact info?

Hi Bethany, We bought a 2001 Beetle from them for 5100 and will be at least 9000.00 when we’re able to actually drive it. We’ve had Herzog VW service department go through it and So far we have had to have the timing belt tensioner repaired, 730.00 It had the wrong dip stick which means it had the wrong amount of oil being used for quite some time, several vacuum lines were defective or not hooked up, turbo lines were defective and needed repaired 458.00, transmission not shifting into drive anymore so we had the tranny serviced 455.00 only to find out 2 days later the torque converter and solenoid are bad and its currently being rebuilt for another 900.00, we still have a check engine light due to faulty O2 sensor and bad cat converter, another 650.00 and their still working on it…….. we’ve owned it a month and have only had it in our possession for lest than a week, Called Sandy River Auto and they hung up on my wife……….”as is” is their leg to stand on…….bummer, may attorney general complaint
