History of service at North Point VW
2003 Beetle that has been in the shop five times in the past two years for overheating that led to engine failure.
March 07 Engine overheated: expansion plug blew out jamming timing gears and timing belt. Water pump impeller was also broken and replaced.
April 07 Engine overheated: Cylinders 1, 2 and 3 misfiring. Replaced plugs checked ignition. Found warped cylinder head. Replaced the head.
Dec 07 Engine overheated: Engine Check light on. Both cooling fans not working and coolant pump and T flange leaking. Coolant Temp sensor replaced.
Jun 08 Engine overheated: Check engine light code showed cylinders 2 and 3 misfiring. CND, however diagnostic showed they were misfiring, the comments on the work order are: could be compression issue (however compression was never checked) and may need new engine.
Jan 09 Engine overheated: Engine Check light came on overheat light came on and both went off. Drove the vehicle home (about 2-3 miles) I had the car towed in the next day and was told that number 2 and 3 cylinders had water in them (sound familiar)? Extended Warranty Company and Dealer told me it was my problem not theirs.
So I had it towed home (at my own expense). I took the head off and saw that # 2 cylinder was polished and looked like it had never been fired. The reason that it was polished is that antifreeze had been spraying into it. If this had been fixed in June instead of a CND when the diagnostics told them that cylinders 2 and 3 were misfiring, the head gasket could have been fixed before it blew. A simple compression check instead of a note on a work order saying “could be compression issue” would have also found it. They were the same diagnostic codes as the ones when the head was bad in Jun 07.
The response I keep receiving from Mr. Wes, GM North Point Volkswagen is “I do not feel as though we have been negligent or incorrect in any of the work performed” The fact that on 27 March 2007 it blew the expansion plug (first dealer it was towed to said it needed a new head) and all North Point did was put a new head gasket and timing gear on. And then on 9 April 2007 (two weeks later) it went back in with a warped head qualifies as incorrect work; and making a note on a work order saying it could be a compression problem and not running a compression check would be considered neglect.
I would like to add that I do agree with Mr. Thomas that driving the car after it overheated did cause additional damage. However, the fact remains that if the vehicle had been fixed correctly in June the problem would have never occured.
