On March 11, 2015 my mother and son purchased a Toyota 2002 Highlander from Howard Bentley motors in Fayetteville, Tennessee. On April 15, 2015, the motor seized up from lack of oil. The service records were obtained by my mother and in the records it showed that this vehicle had an ongoing oil leak, that the dealership had known about from the previous year (2014). My mother brought the car back and they proceeded to tell her that to replace the engine, without labor would be $2600. She asked to see the invoice where they bought the motor and was refused. My son was not provided a rental until 2 weeks after they had the car and they kept it a month. When my mother came to pick up the car, they told her they weren’t charging her for the motor, but they proceeded to charge her $1500 in labor and another $400 in taxes. When dealing with the general manager, Mr. Rick Tate, he told her she must pay the labor charge and he wanted her to “promise ” not to discuss this on the internet, because if she was going to do that then he would just charge her the full amount for the motor also (another $2300)because why should he bother to “help” her if she was going to tell her story. I feel he extorted my mother out of this money, knowing the whole time that this issue had been wrong with the car and no one told my mother or my son before they bought it. He made it clear he didn’t want my mother speaking about her experience. I feel my mother should be refunded the $1902 that she was charged for labor for replacing the motor that died due to Howard Bentley’s negligence and misrepresentation. She was made to sign a document stating she would not take legal action which I feel was forced. If they had been informed of the oil lead from the beginning, they would not have purchased the car.
