I had a hard time putting a score to ‘How were you greeted?” While a salesperson certainly descended on us as soon as we got out of our car, I hesitate to give that a high score, since the first thing that happened was for him to try to get our credit scores and begin selling us a loan. They wouldn’t even talk about a test drive without trying to look at our finances. We took a test drive, really liked the car, and tried to negotiate a price, while they instead tried to negotiate a payment plan.
After a second sales manager came in and gave us the “dangle,” that is, asking if such and such a price would work, he came back after 20 minutes with a price higher than we had agreed to.
We spent three hours in the dealership as they tried twisting our arms, refusing to negotiate on price, only payment. They then accused us of being backwards, since we wouldn’t discuss our finances before even looking at their cars. We tried telling them that asking our price range was one thing, and trying to nail us down to a loan and doing a full credit check before even looking at cars was quite another. During the exhausting process, one sales manager told us we should have no problem affording the car, based on our income and credit. We told him that telling us what we can and cannot afford is not his call to make, and that making a judgment like that is very easy when you’re not the one making the monthly payments.
When you think of the worst high-pressure salespeople, with numerous “let me go talk to my manager” BS, think Berglund. The fact that they try to sell you a loan before they even show you a car should be a clue that they are only interested in your checkbook.
Nasty.
