have been a loyal Volvo driver for 2 cars in a row now. I went out of my way, and only looked for Volvos when I was recently on the market for a newer used car.
I had taken my car there when I purchased my first Volvo a little over 3 years ago. I wanted a simple inspection and road test of the car. Just to see what needed to be done, if anything. They where not outright rude.. but I did feel rather judged for bringing in an older model Volvo. Whispering service personal, funny looks, and a slightly arrogant attitude came with the drop off of the car. Took them 2 hours for a simple inspection when I had an appointment. When all was said in done the report came back with the most basic of “duh” stuff. Half the systems they where supposed to check where ether marked N/A, or had some over simplified, vague remark of no worth. The “expertly trained, certified Volvo tech” had neglected to write down any of the specifics of the engine check other than “Gettin’ there”. No, really, just “Gettin there”. The car was OBD-I compliant, and I found out that my 100 dollar inspection did not cover the code lookup. I guess 100 dollars is only enough to tell you that your engine is “Gettin’ There” and that you have squeaky brakes, but not why you “check engine” light is on. So after finding out that my oil leak was indeed an oil leak, my squeaky brakes where squeaky, my older engine was “gettin’ there”, and my illuminated “check engine” light was illuminated.. I was slapped with a “Hazards waste disposal fee” for an inspection where they obviously didn’t even touch the car. I asked what the fee was for when I looked at the bill.. and nobody could give me any answer. I know there is a “shop charge” for some places, but they know they are charging you for it. If the mechanic or cashier had even the simplest of explanation for the fee I would have not had a problem at all. That was not the case, they simply charged me for it first, and had no earthly idea why. 3 different people on staff could not answer the question. However after pointing it out I still had to insist before I had my money back for the unjust fee. Forget insist, why would I even have to ask? I had made up my mind to never deal with these people again.
But I just bought a newer Volvo, and I figured I would give them a second chance. I needed a timing belt change, and a water pump replaced.I called around to some other Volvo shops in town first. Then I went ahead and called the Volvo Store, just to see if things had changed. I asked for a simple quote on the t-belt, and water pump. The tech looked it up and quoted me at near 1,100 dollars! I told him that Chec Bros. was only charging 600ish for the same service (later to find that Maitland Importers will do it for 500ish, all OEM parts, with a better trained service staff, many that had worked at the Volvo Store). The man paused for a second, and said “Well for that price I doubt they are going to change out your belt tensioner, and pulleys, and if that is not done it can lead to a broken belt.” I can only assume he was attempting to scare me into going with them. It was very dishonest, and misleading. I simply told him “Umm… yeah, I asked, and they do the tensioner, and pulleys for that price”(as most places do with a timing belt). He really didn’t have too much to say other than a polite “thank you” after that. He was at least not rude.
With these 2 experiences, and testimony from everyone else who has had the same trouble I think it’s safe to say if you are not buying a new Volvo from the Volvo Store, then you have no reason at all to be there. Please take this into consideration when having your Volvo serviced.
Don’t bring your Volvo to The Volvo Store in Winter Park for service, especially if you’re a woman. We were told we needed a new radiator and new transmission, at the low, low price of $6,000. We took it to another mechanic, who told us that not only was there nothing wrong with the radiator, but the transmission was working perfectly.
They are extremely dishonest. We bring our car to Volvo of Tampa to be serviced now. It’s a 2 hour drive for us, but at least we know we’re not going to be ripped off.
