Horrible Experience! We were at the dealershp for 5 1/2 hours before they could tell us what our trade-in was worth. After we were exhausted and starving and literally the last ones there – after regular closing hours, we tried to leave at 6 1/2 hours in. We were quoted a price and as we tried to leave, they had us sign a single sheet of paper with little info where they literally had to draw a line for me to sign.
I signed and tried to leave again and they called us back to go ahead and finish all of the paperwork because they would be able to finish it tonight – why have us sign the single sheet of paper? Think they sensed our apprehension and exhaustion? We signed the papers and then headed for the door again to which they called us back and told us to go ahead and drive the car off the lot. The car had NO gas, needed to be detailed and the armor spray applied etc. per our warranty so we practically begged 3 different times to just let us leave the car there while they did all of that and we would pick it up after work the next day. They continued to “kindly suggest” we take the car so we could “enjoy” it (at 9pm). They were not listening to us and just talking as if we never said anything.
Sure enough, I came back the next morning and the “quick” run-through that they assured me of turned into 3 1/2 hours where I finally told the I was really late for work and HAD to go. Not only had I missed HOURS of work, but my car was not fnished and I didn’t even have the 2nd key. I would have to come back again.
When I had slept and eaten and could think clearly, I was furious with what happened. We were given far below the ROUGH trade-in value of our vehicle and were not told what that amount would be until 5 1/2 hours in. Had we been told that amount even 2 hours in we would have easily walked away as we had with other dealerships. When I called the manager back to let him know my thoughts, I was told the car was already sold. Really???!!!
The manager offered me another vehicle to “make things right.” He asked what I didn’t like about the vehicle and I said it was fine, I was ripped off on my trade-in. Once again, he didn’t acknowledge what I said and continued to ask what were my priorities in a vehicle (without saying it and being honest and up front with me, he was planning on simply offering me another car). He informed me he was trying to “rescind the sell” of my trade-in and asked me to come meet with him again so we could work it out. I asked him to be honest and not waste my time. If the sell could not be stopped, I didn’t need to spend another couple of hours at the dealership. He finally admitted his true intentions 3 calls later – to simply put me in another vehicle – again not listening to the fact that I wanted more for my trade-in or wanted out completely.
The replacement vehicle he offered me had 30,000 more miles on it (same year) but he could suddenly offer me $2,000 more on my trade-in.
Salesmen have a reputation of being over-brearing and pushy. I’ve learned to expect that and even learned how to handle it, but the calm, smooth-talking wear you down for hours method I was not prepared for. We hadn’t realized that many hours had passed until it was 6 hours in and we checked the time.
