The experience I had with Toyota of Watertown was a very positive one.David Crea who was the sales person was very low key, friendly, and knowlageable about the car I was interested in. I came away with the feeling that I would recommend anyone who was interested in a Toyota to go to Toyota of Watertown and ask for David. He made sure that everything was perfect on the car before I drove away.
We recently took our 2001 Corolla – only 70K miles – in for service. The oil light and check engine was coming on – no other problems. We were told the car needed a $5300 engine!!
Surprised and stunned, we remembered to ask for the OBD2 diagnostic code. We were told P1349. Looked it up on the internet: there is a technical service bulletin that says it is a known VVTi acuator issue that can be solved for, at most, $500.
When confronted with the TSB, the mechanic could not answer basic questions about what he supposedly found, and claimed the car was “violently shaking and unsafe to bring it home” which is untrue – we ended up driving it home just fine, no shaking.
Mechanic accused us of driving it without oil. Again, not true! As soon as the light came on, I pulled into a gas station and had them check the oil – only a quart down. 15 minutes later, when the light came back on again, I had the same station check the oil again – no leaking.
Mechanic got more and more defensive: “I don’t need no service bulletin to tell me what’s wrong” … “if you knew what was wrong, why did you bring it in?”… and finally, “go fix it yourself.”
Manager knew right away they were caught in a bald-faced lie, and waived the $99 diagnostic fee. I would never deal with this dealership, and recommend you don’t either.
My only guess is that they thought we’d somehow decide to trade it in for a new Toyota???
P.s. if you have this P1349 issue yourself, it is covered under powertrain warranty for first 60,000 miles.
