I took 2 used key fob in to be programmed to my Saturn. More than 1/2 hour after the tech started working on it, the service rep came and told me they could not get into the programming mode. They could communicate through the port to all of the modules but when they tried to go into programming everything shut down so they were not able to complete my request. When I got into the car to leave, I noticed the trip meter was zeroed out – a bit irritating as I use it to judge when I will need gas. About a half mile from the dealership, the airbag warning light came on so I turned back. When I arrived back to the dealership, I switched the trip meter to odometer and realized that it too had been zeroed. I went in and talked with the service rep and he called the tech on the phone and after a lengthy conversation, he informed me that there was something wrong with the cars body control module when I brought the car in and “something was going on inside the car” since the odometer was wrong and they could not program. I pointed out that the odometer was working when I came in because he had written down the mileage. He acknowledged that but insisted that there “is no way we can zero the odometer.” I pointed out again that before the tech started, the odometer was accurate and now it was reset to zero. The rep insisted there is no way they could zero the odometer so it had to be pre-existing problems with the car electronics. I noted that everything was working fine before the programming tool was hooked up. The rep insisted the car had a bad module when I brought it in.
When I got home, I did some research and found that there are numerous tech tools on the market that can change or zero an odometer reading including the GM Tech2 Pro diagnostic/reprogramming tool. Further research suggested that the key fob programmer, odometer programmer and the air bag reset are all in the body control module which is roughly $600 new.
I don’t have a solid way to prove it, however, it’s pretty clear to me that the tech did something wrong and screwed up my BCM and doesn’t want to take responsibility for it. The odometer was working and the air bag light was not on when I brought the car in. After a 30+ minute attempt to program one key fob, the odometer is zero, the air bag light is on and the fob is not programmed. I am sure that it would take less than 10 minutes to figure out the programming mode wasn’t working. Why did it take 30+ minutes to give up? There are a number of things the tech could have done wrong. Things like that happen. I don’t have a problem that something went wrong, however, I do have a problem that they won’t take responsibility for it and worse yet, flat out lie to me that they can not alter the odometer in an attempt to deny responsibility for anything.
